G'day fellow enthusiasts, I am in need of a new or reco alternator for a 1990 SW20 3SGTE. Advice on a reputable supplier would be greatly appreciated. I am residing in Canberra, so local would be good, but anywhere in Aus is fine. Thanks!

Well, finding a new 100 amp alternator for a 1990 3SGTE in Australia is highly unlikely. The Toyota Part number is:
27060-74180.

For those of you that are interested, or find this kernel of knowledge in future years, the two most reputable points of purchase are;

MR2Ben in the UK
 and
 Rare electrical in the USA

I opted for a new unit from rare electrical in the US. The price was around $150 AUD and shipping (express) is about the same.
Now, to piece the puzzle back together.....Seriously, if this alternator fries before the engine has to come out, I am cutting a service panel (see large f**king hole) from the boot into the engine bay......

The only way to remove the 100 amp version is by removing the exhaust. You cannot tetris the damn thing out in any other direction. You also have to remove the triangular rubber block, held in by 2 x 12mm bolts. I found wearing a blindfold and using the force the best way of undoing those two.

I realise this is 4 year old post but thanks for posting this info. If you're still here.. how did you go with the aftermarket alternator?

I can also confirm, taking out the 100amp alternator was PITA FML
