Hello all

I'll do an intro thread later when i actually own a MR2 but read below if your bothered and assist if possible.

So sometime later this year i'll be looking for a MR2, and if i can't find the right one, i'll just swing for a S14 since its my next option in cars..please dont hate

Been reading information this forum has provided regards to MR2 and what generations are available, looks like Gen 3 and up is the way to go by choice, newer, better 3sge from standard etc

Currently on my Green Ps, but will be on my opens Nov'12 so not long. so questions goes

1. are NA worth buying at all? ive read some comments showing they are pretty much nuggets even with the BEAMS?..
2. How heavy are the sw20; NA/Targa top/turbo model/hardtop etc..
3. looking for more specific details of the MR2 generations, disc rotor size, single brake pots?, usual "MR2" issues to look out for etc.
4. People say these are good on fuel..so i ask whats the Fuel Tank size and how many KMs you people have gotten from a standard MR2..not your 200kw+/ V6 powered MR2 lol

The car will serve as a daily warrior, needs to be able to take a beating everyday of the year while driving me to work, so i turn to Toyota for that reason

Quick brief about my car history, have owned one AE90 rolla, four AE86, one S13, all NA model since P restricted..

wanted a SW20 before but bought the S13 since it was available for the right price at the time, a good car too, sold it cause boring since it was not turbo and the power to weight ratio just sucked being a CA18de..got another AE86 which brought more dramas, long story short, F'n over AE86 now as my currently one just stopped working out of no where..currently driving my brothers AW11 4agze and its different, a whole lot different to a normal FR layout but i dont mind it, its still rear wheel drive.

Hope someone answers the question above, i yet to still shotgun a ride in a SW20 but I'm pretty sure it's somewhat what I'm after in a daily warrior car..

Welcome!

1 - If you're coming from NA, then you won't be happy with an NA SW20
2 - Google will answer that specifically, but not "heavy" at all. You might expect it to be lighter given it's a 2 seater & all though.
3 - Google & the plethora of other MR2 resources will answer that. Most issues are relatively common across other cars I guess, but go for a very thorough/longish test drive to check for overheating though
4 - Expect 35L to take you 400km on combined driving. 45L tank from memory (maybe 50). So lets say a range of 400-450km.

quick response, i like that

yeah i'll hit up google as advised but as for the answer for fuel eco, cheers helped me a lot on making a decision.

Ive trolled on carsales and cars for sale here already, hard top is what im after as not to keen on the targa top, just bad experience with sunroof type cars if you know what i mean..

seems like some people overprice their MR2 for sale too, so im planning on spending 10,000 which should get me a real decent 1993+ model? or am i expected to pay much more then that

Car will be taken to Wakefield and Eastern Creek few times a year too so i think turbo will be better money spent

I drive an NA and I wouldn't say it's nuggets but it certainly slower then a turbo (obviously). I am on my P's aswell so I didn't have a choice but to get a NA.
As for fuel econmy I get about 400km out of a tank of V Power around town. Last tank I worked out 12.8L/100km not driving 100% economically but not 'hooning' by any means.
If I was you I'd definately be waiting the few months and get a turbo, especially if your budget is 10k you should be able to find a nice one.

Here are specs:

Gen3 turbos go for over/around $10k. The mint examples close to $15k. Nice modified examples are between $12000-$25000.

There's a black Gen3 for sale on here at the moment, that'd be an ideal candidate for you.

Also a white one in Sydney on this forum (Speedracer) for your budget. I'll vouch for that car. A few niggly issues, but not far off perfect.

Wait til you are off your P's and buy a good SW20 turbo that is not modified too much unless it is recommended by someone on this forum who knows the car well. Spending from $10,000 to $15,000 should buy you a decent one.

N/A's are a good reliable car but considering the cars you have had in the past you will probably be disappointed with the power.

If by "nugget" you mean gutless then what do you expect out of an old 2 litre 4 banger?
short answer is No unless you like revving the crap out of it everywhere.

2. How heavy are the sw20; NA/Targa top/turbo model/hardtop etc..

The targas are a bit heavier and so are the turbos due to beefier gearbox, turbo etc.
So about 1200 to 1300 kg - upper end of that for a fully loaded GT turbo targa. Lower end for an N/A hardtop.
Quite heavy for a car of its size.

Google will be able to assist you there.

Tank size = 55l and I get about 11-13 l/100km average in a gen2 turbo SW20 (running rich). Pretty awful on fuel IMO compared to much newer cars.

Ha-ha, that's the problem Jason.....I am about 50 years off my P's now and too old to drive one as it should be driven.
