Hey guys, just wondering how much you gys have paid or been quoted for a head gasket job on a 3sgte?

That would depend on if a head rebuild was also done in the process, id excpect 1.5k+

Define head rebuild. As far as I know the head gets sent away for crack testing and skimming to make sure the surface is flat add a cosmetic head gasket and bang! $2000

head rebuild can be as simple as strip and reassemble with new stem seals. valve re-seating and facing, or if there is damage to the head repairs as ness. generally a basic head job is around $600. $100 for the cometic HG
 
 the rest would be the $100 per hr approx in labour to remove the head and then refit, timing belt, new oil, coolant etc
 
so yeh, 2k drive in drive out for a reco'd head sounds about right.

It would be much cheaper wouldnt it if you pulled it off yourself and sent it away? but youd need all the tools etc. Get some ARP studs to fasten it too.

That sounds right. I paid more than half that but I provided the HG & didn't need the head overhauled or skimmed.

FYI the dude you went to before told me it'd be approx $5000.

May want to consider another motor since there's no guarantee about your bottom ends condition either. Either way, expensive time to own a 2.

$5000 for an AP repairs special. Bargain. I don't think it's an expensive time to own a mr2. It's expensive to own a mr2 with a 3sgte. Don't anyone take offence as its just my opinion but I think this engine is the biggest peice of **** I have ever had to deal with and that's a big statement as I also own a turbocharged rotary. This in mind I have decided to go a different way with the car. 2gr. I have ordered the conversion kit from Gouky on mr2oc. 270 hp and reliable as a Camry but looks like a Mr2. That's special.
