Hi everyone..
I'm thinking of upgrading some parts for my 1994 3rd gen N/A sw20..
I know upgrading suspension shouldn't put too much strain although i'm wondering if I got new cams and pistons if that would put strain on the engine?

To fit new pistons you would essentially be rebuilding the engine.

So thi if done properly will give it a new lease of life and prolong its existence.

i see.. What about the cams? Would getting new ones prolong or shorten?

cams wont be detrimentle directly. They will increase the power, and you will then rev the engine to get this power.

This will shorten it's life, but if maintenance is regular, it will be fine.

But, the process of fitting cams requires a new timing belt, and while your there itd be a good time for a majorservice, including fitting a new water pump and various seals.

This will in turn be good for the motor.

Anything that adds power is going to put more strain on the motor.

regular servicing is whats best for longevity, and not over revving it, or driving it hard when its not up to operating temp. Etc.

Would be a good idea to upgrade the exhaust and the intake (if you already havn't) and then go from there. But when it comes to mods like bigger cams you will need an aftermarket computer, which just adds to the price as well as getting it tuned.

Pretty much everything you modify will have a detrimental effect on reliability. Toyota knew what they were doing.
But if you upgrade things properly and don't shortcut, you're not gonna have a major affect. For an NA engine, if you don't touch the compression, keep the rev limit as is, don't screw up the fuelling, and keep it properly maintained, it should last as long as stock.

+1 for leaving it stock. I assume you want a bit more power and I can see 2 ways going around it without touching the internals.
  1. Custom cold air duct from side vent to the filter - "Wiz" did this ages ago on his 97 NA and dynoed it. Got 4rwkw if I remember. He got rid of the baffle and used convoluted tubing to the vent. Coolant hose is kinda in the way tho.
  2. Advanced timing + higher octane fuel. Checkout autospeed's "5 cent modification" article. Just be cautious of detonation from too much advance
You prob won't get much but it'll keep you busy for a bit :)

honestly sell it and get a turbo...easiest and best option. Been there and thats what I had to do albeit in the soarer chassis

Totally agree. Getting decent power out of a N/A MR2 costs big dollars. It's much easier selling and getting a turbo, not to mention the rest of the better gear you end up with too.
