Probs worthwhile checking the timing too as its simple to do.

I'd be expecting to pay $200 for an MR2 alternator.  They are not that common, they are unique to the MR2 only.  Don't buy a camry, celica or any other 3s alternator - they don't fit.
 
 

Mate are you still looking for an alternator? I have one that is used only 6 months since new (cost me $320) until my old motor crapped. It has the old style round plug socket. Only one slight problem I think the mechanic dropped it so the plate looks crushed on one edge but I think it's still very useable.
