Went to take the car for a spin and the clutch peddle had lost all resistance and I couldn't get it into gear. After checking the fluid levels and seeing they were low I got a mechanic mate of mine to bring his jack over and we had a look at the slave cylinder and sure enough its sprung a leak.

If anyone knows what the part no is so I can order a replacement that'd be great. My mechanical skills are pretty limited and my mate hasn't done any work on MR2's before so does anyone have any tips on getting this done? ie will it be better to go in from the top or bottom, tips for bleeding the system etc?

Removal of clutch slave/release cyl assy would have to be done from underneath, after you remove gear change cables, and front engine mount.
You won't know exactly what you need till you take it apart.
Check the cylinder bores and piston. If they are ok you may only need a kit.

I had no luck bleeding the normal way (turbo model with the extra tube in the slave - not sure if they are all like that),so fitted a bicycle valve through the small hole in the reservoir cap. Attached bike pump gave it a wee bit of pressure while holding down cap to pressurise reservoir, cracked bleed nipple and it worked a treat. Obviously need a helper but its quick and easy.

One thing to watch when bleeding is to keep a close check on the reservoir fluid level.
That reservoir is very small and easy to empty out and you'd have to start all over again.

Thanks for the link Reddtarga, I was thinking of replacing the whole thing since the cars pretty old but I've no idea if its been replaced before so I'll wait till I get it out and go from there. I'll make sure to keep an eye on the reservoir and if I have any troubles I'll give artymr2's bicycle valve a go.

Now to find the time to get it all done.

Cheers Guys!

Hey Steve,

The master and slave cyliner are being replaced in my MR2 as well. If you are in the ACT you can get the job done at Tuggeranong Transmission Services, they have done it on MR2s before and are a great bunch of guys.

I got the parts from Twos r us

Master cylinder

Slave Cylinder

The thing is if you replace one you have to replace the other otherwise it will break.

Unfortunately I'm up in Brisbane so I wouldn't be able to use them. I hadn't heard that both cylinders should be done at the same time, thanks for the heads up!

I imagine the shipping must've added a bit the cost, any reason you didn't go local?

Reason I didnt go local or couldn't go local was because the shop was unable to source a Slave cylinder anywhere in Australia and the only Master cylinder they could find was in Darwin and it was used.

So I figured I'd get them brand new from US. Yea Shipping was a bit but I rekon It was still cheaper than getting it locally, especially when the parts are brand new.

Steve_A,

Two of us over here in the Wild West had the exact same problem about five weeks ago.........check out thread.....

http://www.mr2australia.c./mr2play/tm.aspx?m=91308

I had both cylinders rebuilt and reinstalled in one day. The rebuilt cylinders now come with a lifetime warranty.

As I have an AUDM SW20, I went through Toyota who arranged the rebuild and reinstallation for me............Even the guys at Toyota commented on how difficult it is to get them out and back in again. Of course the cost of labour was a killer.

To buy entire new cylinders from Toyota is expensive and will take time, it is usually just the insides that fail, so the rebuild option is usually the best when there is nothing wrong with the cylinder housing.

It appears to be the time in the SW20's life that the clutch cylinders fail, have to admit that 20 years is good going considering the number of times the clutch pedal would have been pressed over those years.

Have a chat with your local Toyota Servicing department and they should be able to give you the name of a local cylinder rebuilder.

Best of Luck

Cheers, M
