Has anyone tried using Toyota 80w90 gl4 gearbox oil? It's only $39 for 4L so I'll probably try it but if someone's used it before it'll make my decision a bit easier. Either that or maybe Valvoline Duragear. I've got royal purple in it atm and it sucks. 3rd gears grinds when the oil is cold.

Late response to Adrian. I wouldn't run with a 80w90, would be difficult to shift when cold. I'd rather a 75W85 for a street car than a 80w90.

I'm giving Redline MT90 a crack. It seems to be quite good, although I'm having very occasional trouble with reverse.
That might be clutch fluid though, as I think it's due for replacement...

How much did the box take?  From memory last time I changed it 4 quarts of redline was enough (~3.8 litres).
 
Do the Gen3 boxes have synchro on reverse?

BTW here are the capacities according to the manual:
S54  2.6 liters
E153  4.2 liters 
  
 E153 turbo box oil capacity 3.8lts for (LSD), 4.2lts for (Non LSD). 

I don't recommend MT90. It killed one of my boxes (synchros). Felt ok for a while, but after a few bursts, would crunch into gears.
 
Much rather run with the Caltex stuff. A lot of Toyota service centres use it. Been running it for years without any dramas. Ask anyone who's been in my car, I'm pretty brutal when quickshifting.

what sort of caltex oil jay?
might  give it a go been wanting to try the redline lightweight oil for a change, but not sure yet about it.
