I am in the process of filling the gearbox oil ready for the car to go to the dyno on Friday, and I had 1 attempt on it with a size 24mm socket and it slipped. So I inspected the bolt and its already a little rounded so I dont really want to try again yet.
 
Is there an easier way to try and get this out? It hasnt been out for roughly 4-5 years so its going to need a fair amount of effort to get it out.

I thought the filler plug was a half inch square drive or whatever you call it?

I read somewhere that a six point socket should be used.
The only one I could find was a long series one from Repco.
I then ground off the tapered lead on the socket so that the hex of the socket fitted entirely on the hex of the plug.
I can't get my drain plug out & I can't get decent leverage & access with both hands working on the floor.
I reckon that it will be o.k from a hoist or pit.

yeah thanks Peter, I think I might try the grinding of the socket, as its only a really thin head on the bolt which makes it difficult...
 
Mrskylighter - not sure if you can fill it from the 1/2 inch bolt that sits lower then the 24mm plug that I am trying to get out, but I think it wouldnt allow for you to fill the gearbox fully though as its too low down on the box

I just had another look at a pic of an e153, yep the bolt I was thinking of was a six sided nut not square drive :)
 

I have the correct sized socket at home, I believe.  I bought it when I did mine (and will be doing it again tonight)

Do Not disturb that 12mm hex head bolt as it secures the reverse gear shaft.  Big No No.   Cheers.

Use a good fitting socket or ring spanner, load it up and give the end of the spanner/bar a sharp tap with hammer, the shock is usually enough to crack it, much more effective than just using a constant force.
 
You can also fill it through the top but need the normal filler plug out to get the right level.
