I scored a free turbo today, girlfriends dad donated it off his FD as he is upgrading. Its a IHI RX6D and is in mint condition with no shaft play. Should be a pretty good size for the 1MZ. note, this is just a photo off the net

Car has developed a strange noise from the rear drivers wheel when coming to a stop from 30kmh. have a feeling its a wheel bearing so will have to investigate further this week.

Well after some though, I've come to the conclusion that I wont be turbocharging the 1mz in the near future. there is 3 reasons for this

1. I would end up backwards in a tree. I don't think I am ready to drive a car with that much power
2. Cost. I save a massive amount of money by simply doing up the motor NA
3. Drivability. Turbocharging produces too many headaches, and potential motor issues

So now that thats out of the way, I can really identify what I need to do to this motor. my aim is 220whp+ with stock internals, with good drivability through the rev range.
I have a feeling that this should be easily acheivable, as the 1mz is rated for 87 octane. SAE rated the engine arround 190hp at the crank, so with a retune on 98, we should see a good boost.

Plan so far (not a very in depth list):

Cam Regrind
Stronger Valve springs
Shim less buckets
Port and polish
Custom loom and custom ecu

Also looking at the possibility of running E85, hoping someone with some experience can shed some light on whether this will be a worthwhile upgrade

That's a USA rated 87 octane, which is MON rated instead of RON rated like the fuels here in AU.

IIRC, 87MON is 95RON with standard petrol/gasoline (ignoring ethanol mixes etc etc).

You'd also want a good exhaust/headers that offer minimal restriction.

Supposedly the 1mz's biggest flow restriction is the exhaust. I've got a custom y-pipe (pretty simple) a high flow cat and a massive rear muffler on mine and It's running ~130kw atw. Stock ECU and everything. Only other change is a pod and an alloy heat shield.
Have you seen the built 1mz posted on the mr2 owners fb page? Built all the way through. 350hp at the crank.

I haven't. Got a link? Main problem with FB is it lacks a search function for the hundreds of daily updates......lol
