Mark at MRC was showing me the new setup on your engine today. Congrats man, it looks nothing short of awesome! The crank trigger is one serious bit of kit.
What gains are you expecting to see from the new ignition?
I must have arrived at MRC just after you left today!
Changing ignition systems doesn't magically increase power, but once you reach a certain power level (not far above where I'm at now) the stock ignition system won't hold up. The 1ZZ coils have been used on 3SGTEs with something like 700hp at 30psi of boost, so they are very capable coils! They have built-in igniters too. I'm also happy to have hall-effect sensors instead of the annoying reluctor sensors in the dizzy. Reluctor sensors are annoying because they produce a signal that varies with RPM, ie. the voltage amplitude increases as RPM increases, and you don't see a useful signal at all unless the RPM is close to cranking speed or higher. With hall effect sensors, the signal is simply 'high' or 'low' depending on whether there is a tooth in front of the sensor or not. For a stock ECU this doesn't matter and the reluctor sensors are totally fine, but for aftermarket ECUs it's nice to have hall-effect instead to make things simpler. My new trigger wheel on the crank has the added benefit of providing much more timing resolution compared to the stock trigger setup inside the dizzy.
