I just realised I need clarification on what you mean there.
When you say top-mount in this case, are you talking about the setup you used to have (with an A2A IC at the top left of the engine bay)? If I remember correctly, you said you had your original A2A IC welded/sealed and turned into a W2A type in the same location right? Does your W2A system have use a front-mount by the way? I forget.
Also, while I'm on this topic, I've noticed that it can be quite hard to describe a W2A setup, as there are two major components, which are both heat exchangers, and they are both required to achieve the 'intercooling' effect haha.

Its not top its trunk.

They use a large intercooler and fill the boot with it and cut a while under the boot to chanel air through. Not a graceful solution by any means but damn it works.

From memory Jay welded some plates on his A2A core and converted it to W2A, gives you a nice cheap functional W2A setup, not quite as good as one designed specifically for W2A but more than sufficient. The heat exchanger is located infront of the radiator and piping is run next to the coolant pipes back to the engine bay. Whack a decent sized pump in and you are moving some serious water and getting some very low temps.

In my opinion, W2A is the best solution, you get the advantage of direct air to the heat exchanger up front whilst still having a small footprint intercooler for the engine bay (or boot - you can mount it anywhere).

I am pretty sure Jay got a whole new W2A setup not just his old cooler welded up

Ahhh silly me, yeah I know about the trunk mounting alternative (Nick/Mrskylighter has it right?), but I don't want to do that.
I definitely want to do A2W, one way or another. There is only one possible way that a A2W system can be inferior to an A2A system, and that is heat soak, but I can't imagine that I would ever heat soak a A2W system on the street. Even on a track it would probably be OK with a front mount heat exchanger. The shorter intake piping path of a A2W system also allows better throttle response.

Its not inferior in that way at all. The A2A will heatsoak before a W2A will in an MR2.

"...in an MR2" is the key there haha. A big front mount A2A is very hard to beat. But I do agree that W2A is definitely the best solution for an MR2 (due to the rear engine and lack of space).

i thought jay had his current intercooler made into a water air one?

anyway i personally like my boot and i went w2a.

That was the original plan Trav(booked any flights yet? :P)
I'm not sure exactly what Jay ended up doing
but there was talk of starting from scratch with a garrett W2A core at some stage.
I'll be keeping the boot too(except for relocating the engine bay fuse box into the corner of it)
and be changing the fuel-filler-pipe route for some extra room also.

bionlyforcal- The Full-Race A2A was usually referred to as a top-mount by most
to differentiate it from what most think of when you say a side-mount.

Greg:- no flights yet, im actually broke.........as we are moving house this coming week....

what i did my my filler neck is modify the breather to use a rubber hose so i was able to mount the spearco cooler almost all under the engine bay side panels/extra room.
