I'm not trying to obtain an award winning perfect audio setup, I won't listen to the stereo every time I drive anyway. I'll be happy to simply HAVE a sub haha, as I never have in the past.
Thanks for the tips, but I was only asking about mounting the sub enclosure and nothing else. If you want to have a discussion specifically about the audio quality stuff you should probably make a separate topic.

Cool, so i reckon just get a pair of OEM . It will look stock and sound very nice

I've already got a 12 inch Pioneer sub, I just have to make the enclosure for it behind the passenger seat.
I've still got the stock tweeters, and the stock speakers at the back near the seats, and some Kenwood speakers in the doors fitted by the previous owner.

Why dont you make the enclosure so it fits into the standard bin/subby hole and goes up. That will give you extra volume you wont need for the bit sticking above this point. You could also secure it down there easily behind the carpet (to the vertical forward metal face).

Just make sure the box is the correct volume and has the right port diameter/length (if ported) for you sub so it will perform at its best.

The factory JDM twin amp stereo with one subwoofer in my old MR2 sounded quite average. I didnt try the factory sub with a decent source/amp to see what it would be like.

Yeah that's what I was thinking. I'm sure MANDALAY has heaps of good advice to give, but that's why I'd rather the discussion doesn't continue in this thread as it could turn into many pages all about audio stuff!

The recommended enclosure volume (sealed, not ported) for my sub is 18.4 litres, which is easily achievable without utilising the box/storage bin where the stock sub would go.

I think the forum needs a MANDALAY section, so everyone can drool in the one spot!!

Its not very big, but if you use the area of the factory pocket also (it will be useless afterwards anyway), it will mean the box can be smaller or you could lean the sub back more etc, and not impede as much on seat adjustability.

I believe if you fill the box with that fluffy stuff (dacron i think its called) it has the effect of the box having a larger physical volume. Maybe someone can confirm/clarify.

In any case, the 12 inch sub should give you massive bass in the small interior volume of the mr2.

wow 12 pretty big a 10 or even 8in would be enough etc bass for the cabin of mr2

I've now got a bolt coming out of the the firewall that I can secure my sub enclosure with.
First I drilled a hole from the engine bay side of the firewall, all the way through the firewall and through the carpet on the wall behind the seat (with some help from someone holding the carpet flat).
Then I pushed a long bolt through the hole from the engine bay side, then with help from my mate I tightened a nylock nut on the bolt on the cabin side of the firewall (with the carpet and sound deadening still out of the way at this stage).
Then I pushed the bolt through the hole in the carpet and sound deadening, so now I have the end of the bolt poking out of the carpet, so I'll be able to use that to secure the enclosure with a nut on the inside of the enclosure, before I fit the sub to the enclosure.
