My 1990 n/a mr2 has original struts too my belief, i'm now in the process of buying struts but everyone is saying go too coilovers. This is my daily driver and i'm wondering whether it is worth the upgrade too coil overs since I want to lower the car so struts are going to be a similar price anyway.

Depends on your priorities.
If you want it really low (30+ mm) go for coilovers, but ride may be hard.
 
If ride is important, go for Koni adjustable inserts in your existing struts with OEM '92+ springs (that combo should also be cheaper than coilovers).
That will give about 17mm actual drop compared to OEM '90 model springs, so the car should look the same as the 92+ models.
I've had that same setup for some years and it works great for a daily driver.
