Just wanted to add that my 1989 AW11 JDM import had door intrusion bars fitted when it landed in Australia for compliance I assume.  So not 100% sure about that no side bars needed statement above.

It had them fitted? My engineers report for compliance says they are factory fitted that comply with ADR, so no additional intrusions bars needed.

Mine are definitely aftermarket custom made (Non OEM). Weird :)

Have you seen the OEM ones inside your doors?

Mine definitely had intrusion bars fitted before it was registered, after talking with the engineer he was fairly by the book so maybe it is up to their discretion...

Interesting safety rating from down there, as I know when they were introduced in the US they received a very high rating, and my insurance rates were always quite reasonable, probably at least partly due to that rating, and the small engine size. My '85 got t-boned on the passenger side by a small pick-up with huge carpet rolls in the bed of it, and surprisingly was not as damaged as one might assume. The passenger would have survived no problem, and I was actually able to drive it home, as it did nothing to alter the car's alignment. Just a big caved in area centered on the door post and of course no door glass anymore. Was totaled by the insurance company due to repair cost, but I'm sure it got fixed by some salvage yard, and put back on the road. On the other hand the truck that hit me was undriveable afterwards, as its front left wheel and suspension were completely pushed around.
