Hey guys,

As some of you know I've been hunting for a gearbox for my mr2 for months and for reasons haven't been able to purchase one yet. I've recently found a gearbox that might fit my requirements. My only worry is that the gearbox has come out of a Toyota 184 celica that was converted to a 3sgte and had mr2 shafts. Would I have any issues getting this to work in an mr2? Like with the gear linkages going in the opposite direction will there be any issues or are mounting points different? Is there any reason that this gearbox might not fit my car?

Look forward to hearing any advice you guys may have. So thanks in advance

Cayn.

Off the top of my head yes, you will need to modify the housing to get the shift pointing in the right direction.  It's not a super difficult job, and can be done (carefully) without having to dismantle the box.

Not sure about mounting points - Toyota have a good reputation for components being fairly easy to swap between models.

Otherwise, like other people who have done the V6 conversion, they have had custom shifter cables made up that reach to the other side of the gearbox.

If your lucky it may have originally been an sw20 and the box was conv to fwd. Then itd be an easy revert

So it is doable to convert. When you say modify the bell housing do you mean just basic machining, or is it a fairly complex modification? I'm sure I could find away to make the shifter work. In the publics opinion should I go ahead and buy it? I don't have a lot of experience, so I don't want to go beyond my depth.

It's not actually the bellhousing, it's the case of the gearbox.  Where the selector rod enters the housing you basically are drilling through the end of the shaft boss, remove the shaft, fit a seal to the original hole and fit the shaft to the new hole.  As commented above, take a look and see if there is a seal mounted along the line of the shaft - if so, it's an MR2 box converted to FWD duties.  You Are A Winner!  All you need to do is (carefully) ease the seal out, restore the selector shaft to its original and proper location, and fit the seal to the hole.

Thanks guys,
I'm sure that's not to difficult a thing for most of you, but I think it's beyond my capabilities. I'm still new to these cars so swapping the gearbox will be a big enough challange in itself. Thanks for the info, saved me from a lot of potential headache. I'm just going to hold out for one that's already set up for a mr2. If anyone knows one for sale around the gold coast Brisbane area for a reasonable price, please let me know. I just want an e153, I'm willing to pay extra for a LSD but not limited to.
Thanks again.

Have you seen the gen 3 engine and box package on gumtree someone here posted the other day. It's a bargain, $700. Pretty sure it was QLD.

Cheers

Arty' - the problem with that one is it's a Celica box.  It's going to need the conversion job . . .

Having said that, Cayn' - perhaps you could consider it?  The conversion job isn't that expensive to have done, and there's plenty of us Qlders here who could do it for you.
