As you are a looking for a cheaper engine then a  3sge or 3sgte, I'm assumming your after the cheapest engine possible to get the car moving? Plus since you don't mind fitting a 3sge I take it performance isn't of concern either?
Hard to tell why you're doing a engine swap? What is this car to be used for?

The cheapest engine to install would likely be the same as the one thats currently fitted.

Doing an engine swap to something that has not come in the car previously or doesn't mount up easily will be very expensive. All performance comes at a cost even if your modding a 3sgte it will all add up. Depends what money you want to spend? The cheapest and easiest option is fixing what you have in there now or replacing it with the same.

Swapping in a v6 or 3sgte will be arround the 5-6k mark if you want quality. You can pick up a good gen 2 3sge for about 300-600 dollars.

I got one for 100 :D

Keep what's in there or you will never be driving the car

Sounds to me you dont have alot of money.. seeing as tho you brought a non running car..
Just put the same engine in it.
also will you be doing the work or paying someone if so who?
i dont know a single mechanic in newcastle reputable enough to perform a v6 or 'out of the ordinary' engine swap on these..
its not just a matter of slapping an engine in and away you go, body and engine harness must be matched, clusters swapped, etc etc it can be a VERY daunting task to undertake if inexperienced.

id say source the same engine it has in it, and put it in, or have yours rebuilt.. if possible.

Beat your mates v8 ford?
it will take alot of money to beat one in a straight line.. but it should easily out do it through corners etc.
if you want something fast, in a straight line. Buy a supra.

An mr2 is not brought for straight line speed unless you have deep pockets, they are funnest in corners and take great skill to be able to drive HARD.

Whilst not wanting to enourage drag races on the streets, you will probably find a mildly modded 3SGTE should keep up with most V8 Fords in a 0-100 race. Anything beyond that you are a sitting duck.

If you wanted to beat them on the quarter mile, the proper way to do it, you will need a 6cyl turbo at the very least, so Supra or Skyline, Supra is better obviously ;)

As long as the engine bay is complete and the car hasn't been molested too much, you'll probably find it's easiest to get it running first before thinking about where to take any potential build.

Remember MR2's can turn on a dime, so handling upgrades go hand in hand with freaking out your V8 mates when you point it into a corner when taking them for a ride.
