Was about 14 years old and had pumped over 100,000 km. worth of fuel.
Didn't relish being stuck on side of road or at the mercy of some garage that had never seen an MR2
much less worked on one.
Fair chance it will run for over another 100,000 km.

Yeez ..... I wish I hadn't read that!!
In a couple of days time I will be driving from Vic to Bathurst to watch the 12 HR race - a mere couple of thou km round trip, and my car is nearly 28 YO and has pumped over 300 thousand km's worth of fuel.
Fuel pump is about the only thing on the car I haven't changed. (Tank out, PITA job etc)
I hope it lasts till I get back home, ha ha.

It'll be fine my old starlet had almost 400k on it, service records indicate no pump replacement. I'm sure a new one would be way better but car ran well.

My experience with sw20's the fuel pumps seem to die between 150 - 200k KMs.
I'm sure plenty continue on living, but that seems to be the average life span with the twos I've owned over the years.

To update this thread, I haven't done much or any experimenting lately.

I have ordered a new open starter circuit opening relay (should arrive next week) and also tried to order a new MAP sensor but they are now discontinued... I'm hesitant to spend the money on a secondhand one without knowing the operating condition (if the car it came from had first start issues etc). Hopefully I can borrow a MAP sensor for testing, that will be next on the cards, than I believe I will swap the fuel pressure regulator with some new hoses.

Joel.  I assume you mean a circuit opening relay ?
Do you want to borrow a MAP sensor from my 1998 car ?  Maybe swap it into Roger's car as it is consistently exhibiting this symptom ?

Correct, Doug. I have ordered the circuit opening relay. I may take you up on that offer to borrow the MAP sensor for testing. Will let you know.

Is this car a gen2 or gen3?
If gen2 the MAP sensor is only used for fuel cut for over boost, not cold start starting. There no point in testing or changing it. Unless your fuel cut is not working.
