For travelling between 10km/h and 19km/h over the speed limit, South Australia’s $357 fine is more than $110 higher than the mainland state average. In the higher band from 20-29km/h over the limit, the local $726 fine eclipses fines in other states by around $300.
For travelling between 30km/h and 44km/h the fine is $866 — the highest in the nation
A $60 victims of crime levy is also tacked on to each penalty in SA. Going to court also attracts an increased victims of crime levy. The $427 fine for running a red light is the second highest in the nation, behind WA.
Less than 10 km/h – $163 speeding fine and two demerit points.
If you are intending to attend the upcoming MR2 Nationals please remember these draconian fines.
I find the South Australian Traffic Police to be the worst in Australia too. Being pulled over & grilled in very remote outback locations over 100 Km from any settlements. The cops are just booking every vehicle they can get. even the trucks were all doing 20Km over the posted speed limit. Be very careful especially if you are driving on the long straight outback highways! They are a very unwelcome introduction to the state of South Australia.
These draconian speeding fines have nothing to with road safety, just a means of propping up the impoverished states coffers. As for the victims of crime, very little of the speeding levy every gets to the needy, it's mostly used to run the bureaucracy!
