Hey guys and girls, i've recently purchased my first MR2 after lurking around the forum & the internet for a couple of years dreaming of one. I bought mine from a fellow forum member. A few tasteful mods etc. I've done a little sleuthing through the forum and can't for the life of me find the answers im looking for, so apologies if its been posted (either copy paste or send me a link if its already been covered, patience would be greatly appreciated).

First and foremost, i've done a complete engine swap, head off, strip everything kinda job on an SW20 previously, i'm not a mechanical novice, no need to treat me like you would if you were tech support :P . I'd like to know what commonly likes to fail (e.g. the blown capacitor on the rpm guage) on the early type (89-92) MR2's, more specifically a 90" Aus Delivered model, i can't find an FAQ on this (would likely be a good idea to post one). I'd like to go over my own MR2, employ any preventative maintenance possible, replace parts likely or already in a stage of failing with ones with won't fail.

Secondly if anyone knows if there is a chart detailing the differences between each year model (and badge) with the SW20's that'd be great. if not i'd very much so like a detailed run down of the differences between them all.

Thirdly, i've been told by another member that my car has the later model brakes on it, considering im about to order a bunch of new parts is there any difference for pads or rotors that i should be aware of before i stick my order in? if so, what part should i be ordering (e.g. 2.0T 96+ vs 2.0 89-91).

some info here

https://markdormangarage....technical-information/

Lots of good info on that site.  Further to that the Aussie N/A's from 1990 to late 1993 had 117kw & 190nm torque. The first Bathurst & GT models came out in late 1993 & these and the 1994 model had 129kw & the later ones from 1995 to 1999 dropped power to 125kw & 186nm torque due to changed emission rules.

The Bathurst models were quite basic losing a lot that the previous models had such as ABS, fog lights, centre console, cruise control etc but these things were retained in the GT model and they also had power steering & leather seats.   Cosmetically both cars were similar to previous models apart from gaining round tail lights & clear front parkers.

Air conditioning was an option on both the Bathurst and GT and these cars were not cheap costing around $51,000 for the Bathurst & $62,000 for the GT (without air).

Acccording to the previews at the time the Bathurst's acceleration figures 0 to 100kph was 7.4 seconds and the GT was a bit slower due to the extra weight with p/s etc.

I had a 1997 GT and I think these figures are a bit ambitious. Perhaps if you removed the spare wheel, passenger seat , carpets, tools etc. you may achieve these figures in a standard N/A....

In my experience the motor and drive train were virtually bulletproof if serviced regularly and they did not appear to have any different problems or quirks compared to other cars.

Don't know much about the turbo's...sorry...

Wiz -- was this a ecu run cruise control or a vaccume type one -- I am looking to put cruise on my JDM turbo and wondering if I can set it up from a bathurst model

Mate....I stand to be corrected but I think it was run off the ecu.  If I am wrong someone here will correct me....

The Bathurst model did not have cruise control standard.

My ADM '90 cruise control is run by the ECU.

Do you know if the BMC and booster were changed too. Early models are different to the later ones.

Rotors and pads
'92+ Larger  brakes:
front rotors [275mm x 30mm]
rear  rotors  [280mm x 22mm]

Early smaller brakes:
front rotors  [258mm x 25mm]
rear rotors   [262mm x 16mm]

Front pads for the larger brakes are different to those for the smaller brakes.
Rear pads are the same for both the larger and smaller brakes, believe it or not.

If you want the Toyota part numbers for the ADM '90 model, check out either http://www.toyodiy.com/parts/g_G_1990_TOYOTA_MR2_SW20R-AJMZFQ.html

Yeah...except this info is referring to British MR2's.  In general their factory n/a's had a bit more power & the American ones a bit less power than the Australian versions.

God knows why as they all came from Japan and as far as I know the turbos (special imports here) were all the same.
