mad max mr2
Hi everyone, my name is Max and i'm in a world of hurt. I have a stock 1990 MR2 SW20, which I am driving at the Island 6 hour on August 1. The car has stock wheels (14 inch), and I find I can't source any good rubber for track work. No problem I thought, tried some 17 inch wheels, rears fit but the fronts hit the spring support on the shock tower (no way the wheel will go on)
Looks like I may have to go to a narrower coil over (expensive?) Can anyone suggest wheels that will fit, that I can source good rubber for, or is my only option change the stock front shocks? Also looking to buy coil overs, sway bars, wheels and roll cage. I am located in Victoria but can arrange freight if needed. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. I can be contacted on (03) 56 223641, 0424 951069, or bikes77@live.com.au.

Hi Max, see if you can track down a set of R32 GTR wheels. They're 16x8 +30. That's what I use for my track wheels, they're forged so they're nice and light and pretty easy to find. As MR2's are designed with wider rear wheels I just run a 205/ (I think 35 profile) semi up the front and a 225/40 or 50 at the rear. You're other option is to use standard R32 wheels on the front which are 16x7, however they aren't as light as the GTR wheels.
The other option is to find an Enkie dealer in Vic and grab a set of RPF1 in 15, 16 or 17 x7 +35 & x8 +35 or x8 & x9 +35, they're cheap for new wheels and light weight.
Have you purchased tyres already?
Enjoy the 6 hour, regularity races are awesome fun!
Cheers.

Federal SS-595 tyres, which MR2 forum member Dylan (from Gorilla Industries) sell, are available in the original 195/60 R14 & 205/60 R14 sizes (which are the OEM 14" MR2 rim fitment). See here...

I'm not sure if Dylan could get you a set fast?  Otherwise, you could try Demontweeks in the UK. I bought tyres from them recently and they turned up in about four days.

If your fronts are hitting the strut tower, your tires are probably too big. I had the same issue with my tri-spokes - I assumed they were too big to fit. Then I swapped the tires out for some 215/40s and they're perfect fitment now. It's the widest + most sidewall you can get on the front without more modification needed (I'm pretty sure).

Anything larger will either need modification or just won't fit on a stock system. Also I'm pretty sure coilovers (due to the way the car is designed) works just as the stock springs, so 215/40 is the largest as well. Could be wrong though.
