Hi All,

I am currently in the middle of a gen 3 3sgte conversion on my gen 1 jdm 3sge. I have gen 3 engine harness, ecu, taillights, body harness. Basically, when researching it seemed as long as the body harness from ecu to kick panel was gen 3, the cluster should be plug and play.

However apon removal I noticed that the plugs were different, gen 3 having 3, gen 4 having 3 + what seems to be Speedo drive.

My question is, what would be involved exactly with changing the cluster from mechanical to electrical?
I read a few posts where the individual cut the 91 plugs and rewired the 93+ ones on. Is this relatively straight forward if you have the service manual?

I was fortunate to receive the dashboard wiring with my halfcut, however am not to keen on pulling out the whole dash.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, any body that's done this conversion have any feedback?

Thanks in advance,
Abs

IRRC you need to rewire all the cluster plugs. If you have the info and can solder it's not hard, just tedious. Why not just keep the mech speedo? That's what I did.

Did everything work ok for you?
I was under the impression the gen 3 with e153 had a speed sensor ..does that mean you just left the mechanical Speedo drive unconnected?

Did you need to modify anything?

Thanks for the quick reply,

Assuming that your car is a 91/92 and thus mechanical speedo, you need the drive assembly from a 91/92 turbo transmission which is a direct drop in on any E153 transmission. If you have a 93 or later N/A, then you'll be able to use the VSS that is on the Gen 3 transmissions. I think you have to change around a couple wires for it to work but I'm not 100% positive on this cause its been quite a while since I've done a 93+ N/A to Gen 3 swap.

Found this above from http://www.mr2.com/forums...n-3SGTE-Swap-questions

@artymr2 did you do something along those lines?

Thanks in advance,

I did a turbo 1990 to gen3 swap. As above I just bolted the old speedo drive into the new box and left the wiring harness plug disconnected. The mech speedo generates the speed signal in the cluster that then goes to the ecu.

I didn't notice yours was NA so your speedo drive won't fit the turbo box. But if you can get a turbo box mech speedo drive it will bolt right in.

Cheers
