  1. Should it be installed in my car and run, then removed and stored?
  2. If so, how often should it have this “refresh” installation procedure carried out?
  3. None of the above – just put it away in the cupboard?
It came from a 1998 Rev5 running car about 6 months ago.
I have been led to believe the air bag system is totally independent, so should not be affected by this main ECU.
Knowledgeable comments will be greatly appreciated.

I think capacitors are the only electronic components worth mentioning in terms of possibly 'going bad' over time, but I don't think 6 months would be a problem.
 
The airbag would be totally separate from the (engine) ECU so don't worry about that either.

3 - None of the above. Just store it somewhere away from elements (dust, dirt, rodents, moisture, insects etc) & plastic wrap it if you really want to be safe.
