There isn't much tuning to be done with the Blitz - plug and play! lol
I've looked in to getting one ages ago but didn't think it was worth the gains. Looking at one of these in the future which offers very flexible (tuning/AFM delete) and for only ~$200 more.

Been using a bit of United 100 on the stock ECU and noticed an improvement, but fuel economy worsened from the ethanol.

I know there isnt much tuning to be done with blitz ecu, im just saying isnt the point of tuning to improve AFR because they run too rich, and that is what this ecu does anyway so there is benefit number one among many more.

Getting a stand alone ecu is ofcourse better and safer and with good tuner will give you better results when tuned to your car, and your specific modifications...The only downside is $$$$$$.
After having my old s15 tuned 2-3 times and skylines 3-4 times, mate, that is 4K wasted just on labour which i never got back! Blitz ecu money, i can get back by selling the ecu. Thats how i think now but each to their own...

I agree that standalone plus tuning/dyno time gets exxy very quick. But the Map ECU isnt a standalone its an interceptor to the stock ECU that basically allows you to have full control of it. Tuning is done by an easy to use GUI and linked with a wideband allows easy tuning. The unit is not much more than a Blitz too.

Just 'leaned' mine out for free on the w/e. Midrange pulls much harder now. AFM mod FTW. :D

The Blitz Access ECU does Sweet FA.  Ran one in my GT-S Turbo in NZ and actually lost power, due to it advancing the timing something fierce and not even 100 octane would stop the det.  Went back to a stock ECU and gained 8kW over basically the entire curve O.o

Modding my AFM provided larger gains and was more reliable :P

You mean ECU Graham? lol
Glad you confirmed this.
I was going to get one ages ago but I'm very skeptical about the gains, plus the fact they're not exactly cheap. It IS supposed to have a more aggressive ignition table but considering even the stock JDM ECU pings on 98 (apparently), you'd want to be running ethanol/race gas to really reap the benefit.

gained 8kw when you went back to standard ecu? Lol ok

Ill do a dyno run standard ecu v blitz. That way i have a dyno graph to prove my case. But at the end of the day as long as im happy who cares.

I've been told that the Blitz ECUs were set up to customers specifications, so you cannot compare two Blitz ECUs. The lower power figure with Blitz was probably because your mods didn't match the tune in the ECU.

I'm going to call BS on the 'custom' tune, based on the following observations.  Most of the PnP ECUs available from the likes of Blitz, Sard, HKS etc. were just tuned ROMS with more aggressive IGN timing and slightly better fuel maps, no speed/fuel cuts and a higher RPM limiter (around 8000rpm IIRC) and were intended for use on stock (or mostly stock) engines.  The common factor between them all was the requirement of premium grade fuel (like the 102? Octane available from the Japanese pumps).
Back in the early 90's, custom tunes for the end-user would have been left to the likes of the Piggy-back Fuel computers like the HKS FC and suchlike.

Many people ran into issues with them when they changed things like the turbocharger, boost pressure, timing (distributor), fuel system or electrics.  I've seen several cars with PnP ECUs from the 90s start detonating and reverting them to standard issue ECUs fixed all the problems.

Not so.

If you look at the properties of Ethanol-based fuels, you would note that unless you significantly increase the amount of the fuel going into the engine, you will achieve nothing other than leaning the car out.  Combine that with increased ignition advance under load and you have a pretty good recipie for detonation.

MRTurbo you'd want to be running ethanol/race gas to really reap the benefit.

I did a lot of research when I was looking at getting one and I did hear about this 'custom tune' thing, but no one actually knew where this info came from. Yes they were intended for use with basic 'bolt ons' only, like exhaust and air filter etc and premium Jap fuel (not the swill in Aus). Hence, I wasn't going to blow $500 to find out.
Hope "adisco" does this back to back test on a dyno with the stock ECU to reveal whats really going on, rather than just anecdotes.
