  • buying mr2 project car, could use help and advice with sourcing parts

so... looks like im buying an NA MR2 (93 model) as a project car, its not quite as cheap as I hoped to get it, but not a bad price either (not going to disclose it)

i'll post some pics of it once i get it home in the next few days (on a side note, do projects belong here or in the showroom thread?)

but heres the thing, its currently unregistered (was previously registered in SA) and in need of quite a bit of work to pass a roadworthy in nsw (and also look half respectable) before being registered

main question I have is with regard to sourcing parts, from having looked over it it will at least need:
  • new brake disks and pads
  • a replacement rear muffler / exhaust (the section of the exhaust before it is fully rusted through)
  • a replacement passenger side door handle and lock (colour doesn't matter, paintwork is dead and will be resprayed)
  • a replacement orange corner reflector for a set of 93+ tail lights
im wondering where would be the best place to source each of these?

ive heard that genuine Toyota replacement parts are often reasonably priced and should try them for disks/pads along with the usual auto one / repco ect. dose anyone know what toyota is asking for a set?

as for the rest im wondering whats the best option, should I go straight to the wreckers?, try the forum WTB/FS section? or go on ebay ect.?

any advice is appreciated

(edits include spelling and factual error corrections - eg I confirmed the year and found out its a 93 model)

I assume you have the early model smaller brakes.
Go for plain RDA rotors, probably ebay would be best source.
http://www.ebay.com.au/it...10%26sd%3D360836753573
Front and rear pairs are available from the same seller

For pads the Toyota part numbers are:
front set 04465-17060
Rear set 04466-17030
You could search for either genuine (best) or cheaper equivalent.

cheers, except I was wrong about the year (just got to look at an old rego paper) turns out its a 93 model, so larger brakes it is...

also have finalized sale/purchase details... will be picking it up in the morning

This guy would also have the rears too.
If you want slotted/dimpled they cost a lot more.

Just something to know about SW20's:
Front pads for the larger brakes are different to those for the earlier smaller brakes.
Rear pads are the same for both the larger and smaller brakes.

got it home today...(well yesterday by the time i was done writing and checking this post) looks like ill be posting photo's as soon as i get time to take some decent ones (not that theres much to see)

discovered some more issues in driving it home today,  mainly that its got some oil leaks and the power steering is clearly not working as it should, and i seriously need to figure out what is going on with the automatic transmission settings (seriously, how many different options and modes do you need?)

(yes its an auto, my licence is auto-only till at least march... so lets just say I wont be too disappointed if the gearbox fails after that and I end up putting in a manual box)

also there's a bit of interior trim stuff to do including the passengers seat wont move on the rails (apears to be missing the linkage between the two side latches) and the drivers side sunshade is not attached, which appears to just need a new plastic mounting bracket (if they can be bought separately) or i can just drive without it.. (one advantage of being 6'4")

also not sure if its a JDM (import) model g-limited... I have suspicions but have seen evidence both for and against, REVS is certain it is, and the presence of Japanese coins in the lockable compartment behind the drivers seat is evidence enough to sway me to that conclusion, but its lacking the useless jdm radio and any hint of Japanese writing...  and the compliance plate says Toyota Australia... which makes me think that with both auto transmissions and hardtops being relatively uncommon over here, Toyota Australia probably just imported them in low volume from japan with a mix of both Japanese and Australian spec.

Hard tops were never sold in Australia.
Pretty sure neither were auto's

Freebie sounds like a good project over time.
My experiences;
Passanger seat not moving can be as simple as the wire under the seat from the leaver has come off. Take the seat out and check. My point though; Take it easy on the bolts getting the seats in and out, any signs of thread issues get new bolts. Once the threads are stuffed in the floor it's a world of pain, cutting ho,Es from underneath, wielding nut flanges on, sealing up again.
You should find lots of write ups on the power steering (if it has power steering as many don't). Post up its symptoms and the forum will try to assist. Generally; check your alternator/battery is charging at more than 13.8v. Check power steering fluid reservoir to the right side of the battery. If your speedo is working then the ps ECU should be getting speed signal of when to come on; that leaves the relay as a common issue. Bridge the relay and see if it makes a difference. If not, take the ps pump brushes out and a very gentle sand/clean. Change your ps ECU. Leaving the switch in the steering column. After that you have me stuffed on advice.
Check out the for sale posts and get along to a state club meet up, you will be able to get the parts you need at a lower price than Toyota.
The car sounds 100% imported not Aus delivered but it's neither here nor there.

thanks for all the awesome advise... had a look under the passenger seat the other day, and found the wire was sitting on the floor, but will keep the threads in mind when removing the seat to fix it...

as for the power steering, I tested the relay with a multi meter and found that its not working, ive been trying the contact cleaner fix with no luck so far, will likely end up buying a generic automotive relay and wiring it in, with any luck the relay will have been dead for some time and the rest of the system is in good shape as a result of it...

in terms of parts its looking like i'll soon be sorted for what I currently need, other than the muffler and plastic trim piece on the back of the drivers side quarter panel (just in front of the door), but will make sure to go along to a state meet at some point, even if I have to turn up in a ford...

and yeah, ive figured its defiantly an import, just find it odd to have Toyota Australia stamped on the compliance plate,

I keep saying it but just need to post a build/fix/progress/stuff log at some point...

I made some comments on your other thread about this car - i'd suggest you establish where this car is from, if you now legally own it, if it has ever been registered in Australia and if you'll be able to register it at all before you spend any more money on it. Those compliance and VIN plates are not from this chassis. I could be wrong, but I don't think so on this one.
