MOTEC M4 $1300
It's out of stock at the moment though...

I think its forever out of stock:

The most suitable standalones come down to what your looking for specifically. The better ones are usually the more expensive ones, but give more advanced and better options.
I don't think flex-fuel is a consideration as the attempts I've seen have been very marginal at best. Some are simply switching maps at a set E% or EFI only using fuel trim or IAT maps, which defeates the purpose..even 3D nos maps have been used. I've considered combined mapping using dual load sensor inputs, but haven't really looked at it too seriously. The Link G4 Extreme might be a possibility by enabling 4D-6D mapping, but again theres a lot of tuning to do and it's only going to be a compromise as both fuels have different ign charactistics at mid to higher boost levels particularly. Might be better to wait for the new crop of flex-fuel ECU's.
Having said all that, the G4 Extreme looks like a very nice package with just about every option anyone could want..even per cyl trim. Very nice, might be a bit exxy but if it was me, I'd be giving it a good look, and a bit of research.

yeah i think i have decided on the g4 extreme, i mean it is rather cheap considering what it can do and the feature it has, esp compared to say the haltech p1000 which costs about the same if not more...

Link G4 extreme FTW - They're about the $2k mark or so ?
( the G4 'plug-in' about ~$1600)

Hmm with all this ECU talk I still want the MAP ECU3.... :)

If you looking at Link's, i would be looking at Vi-PEC instead. http://www.vi-pec.com/

I prefer the Vi-pecs also, basically a link with rejigged firmware & software.  Reminds me very much of Autronic which was a bonus for me as I have Autronic experience.

i am a little concerned with the lack of experience with regards to the vipec down in SA thats the only reason i havent really looked into them...

Ok i am a bit confused about this whole flex fuel thing with the link g4 extreme.

Vipec say that you can connect up the flex fuel sensor and tune it on either 98 or e85 and it will change as per ethanol content and temperature. Proefi 128 seems to do the same thing.

With the link G4 I believe you have to tune it both on 98 and e85 and then overlay the maps based on the ethanol content.

Is this something that is different between the Link and Vipec, just that I thought they were almost the same thing with a few changes, but the price difference is roughly $600 - $800.

Also I see that the adaptronic can do the flex fuel setup now, not too sure how their setup works just yet though, and I read Haltech are in the process of doing it to other ecus apart for the platnum series that already has it.

Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

Well put simply I guess, a (true) flex fuel ECU 'calculates' appropriate values based on a single set of maps in response to E sensor readings, requiring substantial processing ability. Where a lesser approach, is where an ECU  'correlates' values between two sets of maps based on the same input.
