My son (Nick) has replaced a lot of genuine Toyota gear on his new project 1990 sw20  3sge (150kms) but has had a really hard time getting a new radiator and condenser.

A bit of a long background story here:
It cost him 2K as a non goer with 4 mnths rego, bad brakes, a straight body with a few minor dings but looks like it has spent some time near the coast given the rust dags around the targa/windscreen area and badly pitted heat shields in the engine bay- go figure. Original except for the recently installed fugly new "look at me"  Alpine Stereo which will go back to OEM when we find the right unit.

The owner told us the timing belt had been replaced 10K earlier and he suspected the fuel pump was dead.  When we got it  home we could hear it humming on ignition and when we opened up a fuel line downstream of the filter it was clear that fuel supply was not the problem. It had spark and fuel so we thought the injectors might be the problem but these tested OK with the node light and short squirts. Even swapped out the igniter and replaced the coil just in case. Could only be timing.  But in addition to that the engine seal on the distributor was leaking allowing oil into the cap ; dizzy cap's terminals were pitted and the centre pin had been fused out, resistance on the leads was way out, the plugs looked old and discoloured and we suspected some of the engine wiring had been tampered with. So we replaced all that gear as well before confirming the timing was so way out on the dizzy at TDC that the timing belt must have slipped. This kind of made sense as we got the engine to kick once, perhaps the belt had slipped again enough to get some kind of ignition sequence. Anyway, we couldn't get the engine pulley bolt off after trying all the usual tricks to be able to do timing belt so we handed the whole job over to our mechanic and while he was at it got him to replace all of the engine seals, water pump, thermostat, drive belts, idler pulley bearing & tensioners, Throttle Body gasket, Valve cover gasket, Vacuum hoses, Cam seals, K&N air filter, fuel filter, new rotors and pads all round. This process has taken 4 months as each time we found a new part was needed it has taken 3 weeks to get the parts from Toyota Japan via Castle Hill Toyota.  So the car would sit at the back of our garage or the mechanic's garage for a month each time we found something new.

The car now runs sweetly but the radiator tank and condenser cores are soft so we have decided to replace those as well.
But Toyota no longer supplies radiators or condensers for SW20 Mr2 . They are showing on their catalogue and quite cheaply too at $160 for the condenser but when they go to order them they get a "discontinued" message back from Japan.  Jayrad, the largest after market radiator supplier in Australia cannot help me either. I ended up buying a full alloy Chinese made radiator on Ebay for $180 incl shipping which looks like it will fit when held up against the old one. There are a few ebay suppliers in australia supplying what appear to be 2 slightly differently manufactured units and "racing" models as well but there are some bad reviews of these saying they may last only a few months. If I was a wealthy man i would buy one custom made from PWR in Queensland but they are close to $1000. Mishimoto make some for the turbo models for $340 but they will not sell to me for an NA car saying they wont fit; I can't see why?

The original Toyota condenser is a Denso but Denso Australia no longer lists it and my AC people cannot source one at all for any SW20 Mr2. I found one on ebay Australia for a 93-98 model but after I placed the order he refunded the money as he had no stock (go figure, he had listed the same add 6 times with different names) and another aussie in line seller also did the same thing. In the end I managed to find a late model Denso condenser from Florida USA and it's on its way here now, just hope it fits and I hope my AC man can modify all the old refrigerant lines to suit the later R134a model.

So it appears that some Mr2  SW20 parts are becoming much harder to obtain than I originally thought and Mr2 owners will have to get smarter with new work arounds.

Has anyone else gone through the radiator and condenser replacement drama lately? If so where did you get your gear? And does the 3 week wait ring any bells?

I took mine to a radiator place and had a new core put in.

The recore was my mechanic's first suggestion but the cheapest quote was $540
A recore is only worth doing if the tanks and spigots are in good condition.
So the $180 Ebay alloy radiator is worth a try. The mechanic said it was a much better radiator than the original one and could not believe it was only $180. It has all alloy construction with a total core thickness of 42mm compared with 28mm on the OEM. It looks exactly like like the PWR or Mishimoto radiators.
But just in case, we'll be keeping the old radiator in the shed for reference.
BTW, not sure how many of these Ebay radiators are left out there so if anyone thinks they need one grab one now.

Brand new Denso A/C Condenser arrived today from downtown Florida USA courtesy of Ebay & Fedex.
Less than $300 including shipping.
Pre 91 model condensers cannot be sourced even after worldwide search so this 91+ model from USA will have to do the job and my air con man will get the ac lines modified to fit the updated 91+ connection positions.
Why has Toyota discontinued these when they are still available from Denso?  Or is it perhaps the case that Denso no longer makes them and I have just been lucky enough to pick up some of the old stock left floating around in automotive part clearing houses?
If that's the case anyone with an NA with dodgy air con might consider investing $300 in getting one before there are none left on the planet.

I checked Fenix out before I bought the one on ebay for $40 less.
Looks identical to the Fenix one, probably all made in China by the same manuafacturer.
So yes, Fenix or Ebay. At least with fenix you can pick it up from their warehouse.
I'm a cheap and lazy **** so i went for $180 including home delivery.

Question - with the Fenix one, can you attach the factory fans and other items? (does it have drain plug, air bleed plug and coolant temp sensor?

Cheers.

Give Christiaan at Fenix a call, he's a former MR2 owner.

Bugger - Fenix are out for the next few months. Looks like that isn't an option.
