RDS I salute you, but you're fvcking nuts!
It's going to be mintier than a minty factory crashing into a mint on national mint day.

Can't wait to see it back in the car!

Absolutely great looking car. Really happy to see someone taking such care of their AW11.

I love all the odds and ends that you have collected over time. You've got a bit of the same disease that I do.

Whatever happened to the retracting fog lights? I was expecting to see them installed at some point.

You've also got a good eye with the camera. Keep up the photos.

And lastly, great job on cleaning out the engine bay. About the only thing holding me back on a similar project is that I am waiting to get a portable steam cleaner to use on mine before I put everything back in, and to have for future tidying up. I'm getting too old for all the hand scrubbing.

thanks. [:o)]

dunno what happened to the foglights.. they're around here somewhere. just a bit of work to get them mounted and working, so it went on the backburner! i guess i was a bit disheartened when i realised they were the wrong cover version. the MK1B aw11 version is the grey half one. :(

*on a random note, will pay good money for a complete AW11 factory fog setup*
i SHOULD'VE bought that SC that was for sale in WA a while back to pinch to fogs off... lazyness fail. [B)]

....anyway, the cars back!
its just like before.. but doesn't leak poo poo everywhere! im not totally happy with everything, but theres not much i can do i suppose. i had almost everything looked at and replaced, and the heater still isn't hot enough, handbrake still is poo poo, and STILL cold idles at near 2,500rpm. i have a feeling its as good as itl ever be though, and they're just design/engineering flaws.
needs a little work tidying up the engine bay now. have to repaint the rocker covers with the little details, as well as the intake manifold.. and a good overall scrub up of everything that was left behind. maybe get some of the bracketing re-plated as its also looking a bit tired.

did 1,000km in the first week of getting it back too. drove to marysville for a pie on saturday, apollo bay on the sunday, and to n from work each day. i just love driving these cars.. its so comfortable, and they fit me like a slightly-too-tight glove!
i hope with a bit of care, i can get another 350,000km out of it. unless i total the bloody thing (and i AM a tad retarded... not the best steer-er about...) im going to drive it until the body falls to bits. [:p]

pic from GOR:

and something else:

i bought a new exhaust for it. well, not new since its far too rich for me, but a second hand Fujitsubo Legalis-R!
not as pretty as the one in the pic, but imagine the same thing in years-of-filth form! the quality looks fantastic, and should be a nice stock looking replacement for my daggy 'Bosal' unit.. :)

Update Time..!
car is running better and better... n done nearly 3,000km since! still easily outrun by old magna's and kids on bikes, but freak it eh, im having fun!
heres the list of the work that was done recently anyway. :)

had a fun time driving the car around in stock 1987 showroom fresh look for the last year, but im going to go for something different now! The plan to mod it like it would have been done in the late 80's.. period perfect! it works so well, and its actually interesting hunting down oldskool bits n bobs.
seemed like a good idea after flicking through my nerdy collection of 1985-90 car magazines. the 80's is fkn rad! basic plans became:
- Simmons. preferably V4's with the full centre part. ive wanted some of these for years, and are an iconic aussie wheel. what sportscar in australia in the 1980's HASNT been fitted with a set of them.
- Momo wheel. 3 or 4 spoke, with the full centre cover. as 80's as possible.
- Recaro/Scheel/etc seats with the hollow centre headrest. wanted a Recaro LX/LS
- Retrim seats and doorcards to match. something bright... and fkn tasteless. ;)
- Foglights. like an old 911, hanging from under the bumper. i have the pair of these, but need them on the car!

aftermarket parts ad from a 1987 wheels magazine:

f&%kcyeah! i need a car-phone..!

now i was fairly lucky, and the parts i wanted popped up on ebay around the world fairly quickly. the recaro's took a few weeks to find though!

the parts so far:

Simmons V4. 15x7 +35ish (flushness is unimportant.. lol!)
$910 posted off ebay. when the hell did these get so dear?? nice and straight, but lips need refinishing, and centres probably repainted gold (or red)

the recaro's-with-mesh-headrests of my dreams. LS-L's as far as i know (edit - they're LX-C's). actually ended up being identical to the ones used in the AW11 Super Edition, complete with LN130 SSR-G Surf rails. $600ish posted, off ebay. not actually in as bad a shape as i originally thought! bolsters to the door side of the bottom are crushed, but will hopefully be repairable when they get retrimmed.

Momo wheel from 'back in the day'! actually in really good shape, and all there. looks good with the center off, but nice and daggy with it on. nice wheel to hold. i think it was only $150 or so.. but the new momo boss kit (ML 4417) another $120. [xx(]

as for the trim, im going for an AWESOME plaid tartan Porsche used to use in the 80's. its fkn amazing.

unfortunately its very expensive for even a small amount, let alone enough to do the centre's of two seats and doorcard centres. so i'll be going for something more generic. blue and red tartan of some sort, otherwise some other variation of loud colours.

mm..

subtle?

bit overdone?

just right?

nah.. bugger it!

anyway things to-do:
- choose a fabric for the seats, and get a bit of the recaro black trim.
- get rails to suit the seats, or modify the LN130 ones. get them set up right in the car, and visit the trimmer who did my GTS a year or two ago.
- take wheels to wheel place to get lips refinished, and then to the tyre shop (thinking RE001 in 205/50 R15...)
- find some brackets to suit my JDM motorized fogs..
- repaint front lip.
- fit Fujitsubo, momo, pop the racks on, and go to town. :D

lets see how quickly i can get this done... ;)

I have a recurring craving to do something very similar
but to a MA60 or DR30
for a daily driver

The netted head rests were a must.
Simmons' were seen more on Aussie and Euro cars then J-tin,but yeah they were desirable, though moreso the B45's.

The plaid fad was mostly only OEM
the American scene was getting into twill trim(particularly herringbone) on sculptured(built out) door panels,
the Aussies were using bright vinyl(pink, green, yellow) designs on flat door card trims.

Love where your going

BEST idea for your car ever!!!!!

will look awesome with your roofrack too. ill be watching this thread even more closely now;)

In regards to the trim check this thread out http://www.stanceworks.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2187&highlight=headliner

This is all the rage with euro cars in the states atm. As LOUD and different as possible! Some of them are using old doona covers for their trim haha.

wow.. i had no idea it was that popular! loving some of the patterns on the headliners!
not planning anything that ridiculous though. just the centres of the seats and the doorcards to match. should tie in nicely. :)

bit of an update:

got a new power antenna after years of ignoring the non-working poo pooness.

off RPMgarage.. for a painful price. why are these so dear?
pretty much because a few weeks ago i stuck my hand down in the antenna space in the RHR quater panel. to my suprise, the aerial cord casing had absolutley rusted to bits! the drain hole to let the water out the bottom of the guard had become blocked, and probably a LONG time ago.
i had to pull out the aerial, then all the airbox piping in that corner (with much effort), then vacuum out all the rusty flakes of poo pooe in the bottom of the guard. luckily it hadnt affected the body at all, but if left there i guess it wouldve eventually!
but new antenna in anyway. good stuff. :)

bought a new boss kit for my vintage Momo:

couldnt be bothered buying a second hand one, or a generic one. im lazy, and atleast this way it went on perfectly. no headfark. nice.
Put on a silver 350mm Prototipo for the time being:
The other wheel will go on shortly, but im loving this one!

The Fujitsubo finally arrived in the country last week too, so went and got that, and popped it on.
i was umming and aahing about buying a second handy, but goddamn, when it arrived... what a nice exhaust! other than the discolouring, its in BRILLIANT shape. SUPER impressed with the quality of the exhaust.. its absolutley top notch. justifies the 'new' price, no doubt! [:0]

ooh!

as for an update on the recaro's - been trying to find rails lately.
Theres none available in the country, new or used.
They're around $150 plus shipping each from yahoo japan.
Idealseat in Melbourne cant supply, but can completley make rails to suit for $385 a seat. they wont modify the surf rails on the seats though, even though they seem so close to fitting. :(
anyone know of a place that can modify or produce rails?

and an update on the wheels?
got the outer edges of the lips cleaned up last week. could've (shouldve) payed to get the centres pulled and the barells polished properly @ $100 a rim, but that seemed too rich for me at the time. i went with just cleaning up the rash @$40 a pop. was done at Neway wheels in heidelberg, and very impressed with the work. its perfect.

just need tires now. was going with either KU36's, or another set of RE001's. been very happy with the RE001's though, so will most likely end up in another set, but in 195/50 R15 this time round! :)
hopefully get that sorted this week.
