Dear Mechanically Smart People,
I kindly as for your help. I have a SW20 N/A, its a track car and doesnt get started very often. I jump started it a couple of weeks ago and it ran fine. Now I've put a new battery in it, it cranks over strongly, starts for half a second or so, then dies. To make sure it's not the the new battery doing something weird I put the old dead one back in and jump started it, as I did before and got the same result, catches for a second, then dies.

I changed the fuel filter in case of a blockage, made no difference. The only thing I've got to go on now is that I cant hear the fuel pump whine when the ignition is on. I've ordered a new EFI relay but wont be here till Wednesday so wonder if anyone had any other idea's to check?

Cheers!

Does it matter if you foot is on the accelerator slightly when cranking?

You probably want to work out first if it's fuel or ignition related.
If you have a fuel pressure gauge you can check the pressure, that will tell you if your getting fuel or not.
Check for spark also with a plug out.

So the fuel pump doesn't prime when you turn key to ign? (Without cranking the motor)

Makes no difference if foot is on/off accelerator. I'm hoping it's the EFI relay not turning on the fuel pump as I cant hear it whine when the ignition is.
Good idea with the plug out, I'll do that this arv.

Thanks

Yes, as far as I can hear it's a bit to quiet back there!

Not any of the relays!

Edit: I checked all the relays in the box in the engine bay but is there a fuel pump specific relay on the SW20 MR2 non turbo? if there is can someone tell/show me the location?

Cheers!

In regards to the fuel pump running when the key is turned to Ig, I though the pump only ran for a minute amount of time to build pressure in the lines/fuel rail? Wouldn't it be normal to not hear it running when the key is turned to ignition but the engine not running?

Why don't you disconnect the fuel line to the fuel filter and aim it into a bucket and turn the key? That way you'll know whether the pump is running.

Have you pulled the fault codes from the ecu? A code might be stored that will tell you exactly what the problem is.

I'm not to sure how it all works in regards to how long the fuel pump should run on ignition (if at all). I just remember hearing some whirring/electronicy noises when the key is turned to ignition, and I'm getting non of that, just silence.

I took the fuel return off and no fuel came out when the key was on ignition (which might be normal, unsure) but fuel did piss out when i kicked it over, so at least the pump isn't dead.

My attention now turns to ignition.

And I don't have a fault code reader thing, they easy/cheap to get hold of?

All you need to read the codes is a paperclip and the following guide :)

How To:- Read the ECU fault codes

How to use the ECU Diagnosis Sytem
5S-FE Codes

You learn something new every day! Thanks for that!

So I've come up with 14 and 21. Igniter and Ignition Coil Circuit and Oxygen sensor.

Any hints what I should look for? I need to do some recon on these two systems...

Thanks again,
