Hey all, I'm just after some opinions about what engine I should build up...
 
Basically I want something around 270kw atw that I can build and not have to reopen ever, even if there's a fire!
 
But I still want a fair bit of drive-ability. Which is why I'm leaning towards a 5S...
 
And, go!

For 270kw the 5S would be over kill as the 3S is more than capable of this. Though the added displacement of the 5S would be better interms of drivability as it will have better low down power with a quicker spool time and if at some point you want to go for more power, it would be much safer to do so with the 5S than to squeeze it out of a 3S with the supposed cracking of the block when going for 300kw+. Though i have never driven a deuce with a 5S...so someone else will need to chime in on the difference between the two.

Of course the 5S always wins in terms of end result, but the devils in the details. 5SGTE can be treated legally like an engine conversion, so there's concerns from that perspective. Building one isn't straight forward either, you really need someone you trust.

Well most of the 5S work would be done myself (as far as construction goes), will obviously need someone to do all the crank machining work (which I would've sent my 3S crank away anyway).
 
Any idea as to how much all the machining work would come to? Will probably send all the internals over to be checked and balanced etc.

Its not just the crank its the block that needs work as well. Holes for the alt, drive shaft brackets ect.
I cant remember the exact cost of doing mine but if you allowed $1000 extra on top of building a 3s you will still have change.

I couldn't pinpoint the cost either, but it could also involve drilling the block/matching up water galleries. Something I wouldn't simply trust anyone to do.

do it yourself, it's not rocket science.
 
place old gasket on block to see where the holes need to be drilled and the size.
 
or you can buy the ATS 5sgte HG, tho i'm not sure if they're to suit gen2/3 heads or both?
 
most of the holes are there for the ALT bracket, as they have the PS pump bracket there. TBH the alt bracket is way overkill with the amount of bolts it has etc.
 
also the camry has a driveshaft support bracket there also, so i don't think you need to drill holes for that.
 
if you want to run the STD turbo then you also need to plan out where your going to source the oil feed for the turbo from.

I suppose there would be a few different castings for the blocks, so would just depend on what you end up with.
I had to get holes drilled and taped for the alt even with just using a racerx bracket, also needed the ones for the drive shaft. But it had one for the turbo oil feed.

I had to drill for alt and drive shaft, but if your contemplating building it yourself you should be able to manage this.  My 5s block had an oil feed so was a non issue.
 
Machine work (coolant flow related too) is where most of the differences are so get this done by someone in the know, other than that mine was built just like any other eng.
 
In terms of performance, I run a GT2860rs so not much larger than standard, but I noticed a huge jump in response and off boost power.  Spool time is awesome.  This is all on my 'run in tune' so I would expect much more from a power tune.
 
What turbo are you thinking of running?
 
Oh shameless plug, if serious about going a 5s have a look at Totens proposed built eng in the for sale section, it would save you all the hassles involved and you wouldn't have any reason to open it up no matter what future upgrade you may desire.

ATS 5SGTE gasket wouldn't suit a Gen3 head. Line it up & it's pretty clear to see why it's not ideal.

If you have the resources & can deal with the legalities, by all means go for it. You'd also need to decide on oil squirters & oil cooler too.

A bit of sump work required too (in mycase at least).
