I have some new updates for everyone,
The motor received an attempted test start last night. All the fluids were topped up and I was sure to see it running by the end of the night. I went to fill up the coolant system and unfortunately heard a particular familiar sound which was similar to urine into a toilet bowel LOL. It ended up being the water pump weep hole pouring out. That wasn't too much of an issue because I was going to change the timing belt and water pump once I knew the motor was running.
Well after a heap of stuffing around trying to get the car to fire up, me and my best mate noticed no fuel on the plugs. After inspecting the loom I found the fuel pump loom connector loose on the fuse junction box. After this the motor was getting fuel but unfortunately still no firing up. I had only the exhaust manifold on so it was very easy to hear the motor pulse. The second thing we noticed was the drivers side earth wire to the motor was starting to smoke when cranking the motor. It ends up that the earth points I was using from the battery were coroded and I had to clean them up. Once this was done the car was cranking over without any wiring heat up issues.
Well the car was still not starting after ages mucking around with the distributor alignment, the car was still not firing up. I couldn't even hear any of the cylinders firing, the motor was just turning over.
After much reading up and lots of help on the forums I found out that I had put the dizzy in 180 degrees out. While I thought I had the motor on TDC to slide in the Distributor, the intake cam was not properly aligned, I had to rotate the motor again to TDC and the marker on the cam was visible through the oil cap filler hole.
Well I charged up the battery again and realigned the distributor. After about 6-7 seconds with open throttle the motor sputtered and splattered, before I knew it the motor fired up and was able to run without any assisted throttle. Wow was I happy to see that after all that work.
Now the fun part, i've still got the following to finish off:
- Bleed front and rear brakes
- Change Timing Belt and Water Pump
- Install radio, heater controls
- Install A/C Lines
- Install A/C and Power Steering Belt
- Bleed Cooling System
- Bleed Clutch
- Do mad skids once its done lol
Here are some photos for everyone :)
The 4age 16v smallport motor all in the engine bay yay. Still needs airbox and a few other bits:

Car definitely needs tinted windows

Better pic of the new Disc Brakes on the rear

SX Dash is pretty awesome. 7 gauges give me a bit better idea of what the motor is doing (and what time it is lol)

I felt very lucky today, a good friend of mine mentioned that there was a set of Hurricane 4-2-1 extractors on a ae82 twincam at centre road wreckers today. He wasn't able to remove them for me as he didn't have any tools with him. I was originally planning on going first thing tomorrow morning to get them as I had work today. Well I mentioned it to another great mate of mine that I was worried I might miss out on them but thought I would hold out anyway till tomorrow.
Well I got home today and guess what I saw on my front porch... My mate ended up going down to Centre road and buying them for me. Absolutely awesome!!!! Was soo happy. Ended up getting them for $45 so I think I didn't do too badly at all. They won't necessarily be tuned length but they definitely look better than the tired old cast factory exhaust manifold.

This weekend I got around to replacing the timing belt and water pump. I should have done it when the motor was out, but I couldn't get the crankshaft bolt out for the life of me haha. I use the "car Stand" and cranking the motor over with the efi fuse out. Its a great technique although a bit risky lol
Proof to myself that the timing belt is all aligned correctly (the dot on the intake lines up to the marker behind timing belt)

The dot below on the exhaust camshaft lines up nicely to the marker on the cover behind it.

TDC Indicator visible in the middle of the cam covers lol (Good old screw driver)

The motor is pretty filthy under the covers unfortunately. Thats ok though I am hoping an oil flush should clear it up a little bit. This seems pretty typical for jdm import motors. Gummed up carbon throughout the head.

I've dreamt of seeing this motor in a AE92 Sedan for the last 11 years. Great to see it finally done. I'll see if anyone can spot what I have done wrong in the pic below.... LOL I was sure to fix it up asap. (for those that don't know the 4ages so well, I put the cam covers the wrong way lol)

I finally got around to finding a Mazda 626 front lip in resonable nick at Pick-A-Part for a hefty sum of $15 hehe. Was an absolute bargain as it will make the car look very nice indeed

Thanks mate :) I've always wanted a GT AE92 Sedan too haha. I've been following that thread more recently like a hawk, such an awesome levin. I wish I could find some of those OEM bits for mine. But mine will never be a true GT Sedan lol

Well to say i'm disapointed is a huge understatement. The water pump needed changing just to start the car (since the other was leaking like nothing else). So after doing the timing belt and getting it started the motor is still not quite right, so I thought i'd paint the cam covers to cheer myself up a bit.
Well heres what I found:

Thats one pretty nasty head gasket issue. Water in the oil. As a result i've pretty much given up on this motor. The heads were filthy and to make it worse its blowing blueish colour smoke on idle. At this point it feels like all this work was for nothing. There was so much work getting this motor working from the parts car motor (fuel rails, sensors, injectors, hoses, fuel rails etc).
My 2 options at the moment is to
- Remove the head and get it reconditioned (what a crap of a job to do since the car was technically good to start driving)
- Bite the bullet and just get a blacktop 20v motor or 4agze
This motor has so far set me back $1500 or so to get running, for it to be needing more work after all this is a huge headache after this much work.

Ah man thats gotta kill your drive... head reco would have to be the most wallet friendly option I'd imagine, provided its a viable head.

Thanks man. Gotta keep my head up hopefully lol
After a bit more investigation there may be more to it. I thoroughly cleaned out the cam covers and noticed one thing in particular. The ventilation hole hose that goes to the intake was completely blocked up in the cam cover fitting. there was actually chunks of carbon deposits in it lol. This could be a good reason for the blue smoke (lack of ventilation in the head). The smoke at idle could very likely be valve stem seals drying up too (hopefully), especially since the motors been sitting around for so long.

With regards to the milky substance, I originally drained the oil, put new oil and filter in then started the car. Since the motor has been sitting around for so long there is a good chance there might have been some humidity/water in the motor and there is a possibility the head gasket may still be in good nick. I'll flush the oil out with the newly cleaned cam covers and see if it returns. I did the head gasket about 6 years on a 4age and it wasn't too bad at all. Just a pity since I have to align the timing belt again.
