-110 kW is not  THAT bad. A stock JDM SW20 gen2 TURBO only puts down about 120 RWkW (yes I dyno'd mine in the past) - Its obvious that 98 fuel and 20+ years of engine wear take their toll....you still gotta drop ~10k into the engine bay to get a "warmed up SW20".

-Who cares about the MX5? its still essentially a hairdressers car. 

 
Oh....I am deeply offended. I have an MX5 and have never dabbled in hairdressing.  MX5's are a 'gentlemans' sports car. Good handling and very quiet compared to my previous SW20 which was a rip snorting noisy 'drivers' car.  Both great cars in their own way.
In saying that I have driven Mazda MX5 SP models which are turbocharged with 157kw standard and only weighing around 1000kg and they are quite impressive.  

who ever refers to these beautiful cars as a "hairdressers car" or "non proper sports car" definetely dont deserve to be driving an mr2, better yet to just hang round bogans and start driving commodore vn's, vs's and d like no offense :)
 
toyota intended d 86 for the young enthusiasts  who cannot afford an expensive sports car which is why they intended to sell it round the $30k mark but $40k??? looks like it al ended up being "business as ussual" changing their market now to yuppies earning good money who probably knows f#%$ all about cars and just wants to drive round in a sports car. dont get me wrong i like d car a lot and was very excited to get one. but no not for $40k and hell no/not going to trade in my sdub for such.... :)

Haha don't take it personally wiz fiz, when you think about it, it's an MR2 forum at the end of the day, biased answers are a given. In saying that I think MRTurbo was just being sarcastic...an MX-5 would be similar to an MR2 (that's why you got one yeh?), just so much less of a PITA to work on lol
 
And don't forget Tipsiduece, $40-60k back then was a lot of money...well more than now anyways due to inflation

Ha-ha....it's all tongue in cheek mate.  I loved my MR2 and still miss it at times. When I retired about 4 years ago my missus wanted to drive it and be involved in club runs too but she couldn't drive a manual and I realised that I would never be able to teach her to drive a manual SW20 of all things so to keep her happy (as you do) I sold it and bought an automatic MX5.
Very docile little car compared to the MR2 but still a lot of fun especially with the top down.
Maybe I should now be looking for a part time job as a hairdresser eh?   

i reckon a supercharged MX5 is a very awesome little car... and theres not much around that could match it for smiles or speed in the twisty stuff... BUT, they do have a bit of an image problem...
 
and realistically anyone who thinks the 86 isn't going up against the mx5 is kidding themselves.

I saw a site last night that showed the comparisons in size and profile, the 86 is only a couple of inches longer than the mx5.
I had no idea it was that small, counts me out.

I would like to see how a manual Drive by wire feels like because i have to say in the auto , even with paddles the 2.4 in my company car Honda Euro , i have grown to HATE !
Nothing beats the instant reaction of a TB with cable.
 
In the very expensive cars its a different story

I really want one, I can see myself getting one in the future. I just need to test drive one!
