So who would 'trade in' their beloved MR2 for one of these babies, when they come out later this year?
 
I can really appreciate what this car is all about, which isn't the traffic light drags (*yawn*) but a fuel efficient-fun rear-wheel-drive car, that likes to eat corners. Some people say it'll suffer the same fate as the Mazda RX8, but I think that car had reliability and fuel consumption issues, which doesn't make for a good car.

I could not see me trading in my AW11 for one of these. My AW is a sunday car for enjoyment of driving, and if I was going to trade it on anything, than that would need to be a SIGNIFiCANT step up in performance/prestige. I can't see this doing it for me.
Although I like the look of it and the idea behind it, its not what I would be after. As a daily I could not consider it as it's only 2 door.
I don't think it will suffer the RX8 fate - this is for mass production like celica's.  unlike the RX8 (which was low volume and different just to be differemnt, rather than different to achieve anything)

If I need a company car for out in the field in the next few years, I'll be looking @ one.

I'd definitely consider one in a couple of years. Driving my gfs 7th gen Celica around lately has brought back my appreciation for high revving N/A sports cars. Hate to say it but I have as much fun driving that around as my MR2 nowadays, despite mine being a fair bit quicker in a straight line than the Celica. I know a RWD platform would just enhance the whole experience beyond a Celica. If I want straight line speed, I'll just hop on the bike. :)

i'll consider one for the gf when it's time to trade in her car if conditions are right. At the moment her car is our "family" car though we dont have kids... so it gets us around, but it also has back seats. I'm looking at buying a new dualcab hilux, and we might be moving closer to the city, so her commute would go up... and a smaller more fuel efficient car might be in order... we have been thinking VW polo or golf in GTI or TDI... but if the price of this is right it might be in with a shot despite having no rear doors.
 
no way in hell id be swapping my mr2 for one... 

Other than the 4 seats, it doesn't have the power to give me more smiles than the SW20, and it I don't think it'll have the handling to give me more smiles than the AW11.
 
But i'll have to test drive it to see really.

If my MR2 began to fall apart or become unreliable (which it never will as long as she gets TLC) then I may consider it...for the girlfriend (non-existent) lol
Interested on how the low centre of gravity affects the feel of the car cos nothing comes quite close to the feel of an MR :P

Don't get me wrong I really love my SW20, but lack of any kind of space makes it about as practical as my motorbike. You cant even fit 2 17" tyres anywhere in the damn thing.  Power is like a drug habit anyway:
 
MR T buys a car with 200kw, he gets bored of 200kw
MR T spends 10 grand to get 300 kW
MR T LOVES 300 kw.
6 months later mr T is bored of 300kw and having to battle monumental Lag in traffic and out of corners.
MR T sells car and buys a fun RWD sports coupe with a full warranty 
mr T now loves life again.
 
Sorry to say Tree but i'll guarantee you it'll handle better than a car with 23+ year old suspension/chassis design and development. :P
 
 

The reviews in English mags CAR & EVO (latest issues) absolutely rave about the Toyota 86 (and Subaru version). Both compared favourably to steering feel and handling prowess of Porsche Cayman!!!
I prefer look of Subaru version.
A great alternative to an ageing Celica if you were looking to replace it with something with great handling and reliability.

and thats exactly why i think this car is best suited to the girlfriend...
 
kidding.. dont be a hater.. there's some immense benefits of this car over the mr2. extra seats, newer tech, newer car(less wear), boot space, bigger brakes, forgiving handling - and in my case... hard ride, police attention, t-top leaks, noises (turbo whistle, body rattles and 3" straight through exhaust and crap paint :) theres potentially a ton of reasons a new, more practical car could be good... but none of them quite make up for the MR drivetrain and timeless looks of the MR2.... let alone the immediate differences of less kick in the pants when you stomp on the gas or the thrill you get knowing that you're driving something you have to respect...theres going to be a lot of posers buying 86's in fact, theres a point, how much more likely would i be to get arrested driving a car that LOVES to drift......
 
also theres going to be a lot of posers who cant drive and dont really like cars buying 86's new... i reckon they'll be like cockroaches....and the mr2's are getting rarer., there's something cool about having a classic older car.
