Hi guys! Im new, long time follower... Finally felt worthy of joining once I bought what is easily the most fun, enjoyable, rev happy drive Ive had so far the MK1 MR2 AW11!

I recently purchased this super red AW11 in Feb and not long after the head blew... PANIC not what I had in mind!

Bought on the cheap and never intending on modify it. (EDIT: 1 year later - In hindsight, can see why it was priced so low...)

After much deliberation, and realising this car is so different to the norm, has so much character and showing signs of a hard neglected life, a new lease on life a goal to restore it as much as possible to OEM standard, using OEM parts where applicable, with minor upgrades and a well deserved heart transplant was decided.

Deciding to not go down the 3SGE 2L route but rather in update line with the original intention, Ive decided the NA route via a new motor from an AE111 Sprinter, ex japan 4AGE 20Valve Blacktop!

Condition / notes when purchased in Feb 2011:
- Currently on its second motor.
- Currently on its second gearbox.
- Saggy Yellow King Springs.
- Second respray (average quality).
- Custom sound system installed.
- - Rear firewall cut for speakers.
- - Interior C-Pillar trims cut for speakers.
- - MDF Subwoofer box behind drivers seat. Seat unable to slide back.
- Cracked center console.
- Cracked instrument cluster binnacle.
- Cigarette burns in seats (Minor).
- Cigarette burnt door cards (Minor/Obvious).
- Cigarette burnt carpet (Minor/Obvious).
- Missing shift boot gaiter.
- Missing interior sunroof shade.
- Missing interior sunroof shade bag.
- Mitsubishi fuel filler cap.
- Rubbish interior wiring attempts.
- Repaired front spoiler (Multiple).
- Resprayed front bumper (over existing decals...).
- Missing front badge.

My adub goes off to Jocaro Motors this week to have the swap, harness spliced and cooling sorted... (Good guys responsible for the Porsche GT3 Super Cup cars), will post pics when its done =P
Thanks you guys for making this a wicked forum, looking forward to meeting some of you on the roads!

(Also did manage to see those cool AW11's and SW20's at this years F1 display great job guys! If you're there next year count me in!)

Yeeeoww!

and then...
There's something very distinctive about the smell of blue smoke ($$$)...

Seeing it wasn't going anywhere, decided to fit a few things:
Nardi / Personal 330mm Suede wheel

Circa 1993 RAYS Engineering / Volk Racing GR-Ns - 15x7inch 35mm offset

Maybe refurbish and powder coat?

** Purchased Fujitubo Legalis exhaust from JDM Concept, awesome bit of kit stainless and nice together rhs twin pipes. But seeing the 20v is going in wonder if its the best option??? bought originally to suit the 16v...

Fitted face lift rear tail lamps:
(To fit the drilling of 2 additional holes in the sheet metal is required. Optional to slot a few other holes for flush fit and optional to fit retaining clip hole for the number plate surround - and also the rubber gaskets for number plate lamps are different).

Boot key requires tube/cyclinder to seal the newly created distance gap...

Will post more pics of the 20v going in and the wheels cleaned and fitted... need to find some decent lug nuts... =P

Great work mate, looking brilliant. I wouldn't change the wheels at all. I reckon they will look spot on with the car.

Melbourne's weather was pretty sweet today so... suns out trims out getting ready for engine swap.
Love how high the AW11's "transmission" tunnel is.

Inspected the recently fitted face lift taillights after the weeks rain, was suspicious about the condition of the original rubber gaskets/seals... water did find a way in arrrrrrrrrrrr...

So off with them. They can dry in the sun while I replace all seals...

Clark Rubber had 5mm foam rubber very very similar to OEM material, was $11 for half meter so traced and cut new seals.

For extra security used a similar butyl rubber compound to OEM seal (rolled blob is original) ran a thin bead on the tail lamps, fitted gasket then applied a thin bead on the otherside before fitting to sheet metal.

All done looks pretty good all bolted up and pretty confident that should do the trick.

Sun was STILL out, loved how the wheel was looking.

Thinking I might remove this mount and paint it high gloss black -  leave the gaiter / boot off?

and then the day unfolded...
Removed the carpet (found a total of $7.42 so far yes that's right 2cent coins, years of dust 3 random keys a parking ticket and a pen) and found this rubber plug had been out of its hole for some time so this side of the car had filled up with dirt and dry dust...

and then..... arrrrrrr.... man....
Rust in the frunk! Another one of these rubber plugs had popped out, with this one missing for some time. Enter rust and bubbled lifted paint.

What to do???
Then more... a decent spot of rust on the rear RHS wheel guard, was a soft blister SO I poked it and revealed some of its extent... again what to do???

Inspected behind the lip and heaps and heaps of dirt came out, a full bucket by the end of it.

Cleaned all the dirt debris out, you can see the salt white line of how high / built up it was.

That was about it for the day, removed all trims and liking the look, tempted to dry ice the deadener and leave it...  tempting!

Never know what you find on the floor. I looked under the seat when I got my car and found old toothpaste.
When are you putting the wheels on?
I love the steering wheel aswell. If you don't mind me asking, how much did it set you back?
