The flagship version will incorporate a revised version of Subaru’s DIT (Direct Injection Turbo) boxer engine generating more than 220kW (a 2.0-litre for Japan, 2.5 for export markets), married to an eight-speed automatic transmission.
In perhaps the best news for performance enthusiasts, the same turbo engines will finally find their way into the existing 86 coupe around the same time (2016), probably as part of a midlife makeover. 

The turbo coupe is expected to command a price premium of around $5000.

Given Toyota’s bent for hybrids, you can guess what the other 86 sedan powertrain will be. Yep, a hybrid. 

But according to our source, the boxer-hybrid fitted to Subaru’s XV Crosstrek is not powerful enough for the 86 sedan. So Toyota is readying a hybrid unit that’s compatible with Subaru’s direct-injection boxer engine.

To deliver all-wheel-drive traction, Toyota is also working on in-wheel electric motors at the front, an addition that will undoubtedly push the price of the hybrid 86 sedan up to around $50,000. 

That’s why the turbo version will precede the hybrid’s launch by several months, landing in showrooms priced from under $40,000 by mid-2016.

The soft-top 86 convertible however, will arrive much earlier -- in October this year.

I have been hoping / waiting for them to turbo charge!  The lack of power in the current 86 to me was the only let down :-(

The lack of traction with this news article worldwide still leaves me skeptical. The only real news is the conversion away from D4S to Subaru's DIT tech (doesn't surprise me from a subaru perspective, does for Toyota though, basically means the 86 will be more subaru DNA than anything else), and the imminent official announcement of the convertible model.
 
The rest of the article's "scoop" has been around the rumor mill for a while, and while it's no secret toyota have been testing different reiterations of the model, the message from Subaru has been very clear that STi is having nothing to do with developing a turbocharged BRZ though.
 
It sounds very likely the "new" engine combo is just copy/paste from the newly released WRX. I still doubt they'll actually put a turbo in the coupe. An AWD turbo sedan version is treading heavily on the WRX's toes, even if the front will be exclusively electric driven. So who knows how far this will actually end up? FHI is partly owned by Toyota but they still have a say whether they want to help build something that will cut into their own product lines.

Well - nows the time for me to start saving...

Just buy an 86, and get yourself a Crawford performance turbo short block and turbo kit. Run it on E85 and you'll be pushing 500HP, flex sensor it so you can run 98 when you want too. Considering the base model is so cheap I'm really surprised very few people are actually going down this route.
Even low boost SC/turbo 86's are thin on the ground.
Cosworth have announced they are coming to the party too. I'll be ordering a BRZ gauranteed in future but I'm still undecided whether turbo is neccessary or not. From driving them I've never felt them inadequate with 200HP.
