DUST OFF THE BANJOS - ITS DEEP SOUTH TIME

Now that the federal election is over Australia is again open for business , so its time we had the September 2013 MR2 Run.

Although the Run Manager is still recovering from surgery and many members are getting their cars ready for the Tassie trip (the President included), there is no real reason why we can't dust off the banjos and voyage south of the border into the Kentucky-like backwoods of the border ranges so loved by Fredhoon in his youth.

Much has changed though since 2009 when a young banjo-playing Fredhoon in his new MR2 first toured the area looking for a guitar player to duel with and a river to do a canoe trip on (Deliverance anyone?). However, we intend that this Run will be in the Fredhoon spirit, with interesting roads and some very challenging sections.

An extensive recon conducted a few days ago to confirm Fredhoon's memories of his youth revealed many roads thought to be tarred are still bad dirt, there are roads that have stayed closed since the big rains and landslides of a few years back, eating places on the old route have changed hands and many have gone up market in menu and cost, and the local filming of the movie "House of Wax' starring Paris Hilton a few years back still gives people in the area diarrhoea.

This Run will officially start at Mudgeeraba with a 9.30am departure, although anyone wishing to meet previously and travel down the Gold Coast Freeway together should be at the BP Service Station Yatala (take Exit 38) at 8.30am for a 9.00am start.

The route includes as many twisties as possible, with the intention to have a short morning tea once we cross the first range, then a lunch stop at Uki, and the farewell back at Beaudesert. The big news is that the Lions Road is in much better shape than it was a few years back so this has been included in the route. If you haven't ever driven the Lions Road then make sure you come!

A fully detailed Run Sheet has been produced and will be sent out by PM as per normal to those who include their names on the Roll Call. If you know of anyone who would like to come but doesn't have an MR2 then invite them along. Hope to see you there, and don't forget your banjo.

Lyons Rd was pretty rough on the NSW side when I drove over it in the work car a week ago. The hill climb part itself is quite nice, it has had some much needed repairs and the QLD is tidy once again, minus a few rough edges to drop off when passing on coming traffic.

99% chance I won't make this as I've a few planned weekends this month for digging post holes and concreting fence posts at the Shrine of AW11, which unfortunately has left my AW11 unrego'd and running on two cylinders currently. 1% chance though I could turn up in something else....

For anyone interested, the following Whereis Map is a rough outline of the original 240km route into NSW and back up the Lions Road (the border ranges detour is unpaved).  Hopefully this will provide some motivation for blowing the cobwebs out of potentially lethargic vehicles that have hibernated during the winter.
