ok guys so here is the thing im thinking of taking the 5sfe engine out of my old celica and putting a 3sge head on it what im wondering is it possible? what would i need to do the conversion and also ill be building the motor. what parts/brands does everyone recommend for add ons to the engine like race pistons, cams, valves, ect. or would i just be better of buying another 3sge motor and doing it up.
cheers everyone

Hey Zeus Jr,

I looked into doing this when i was on my P Plates, but it was so difficult and expensive, and the gains would be so minimal.

Best bet would be to buy a Red Top Beams if you are set on keeping an NA 4 Banger. Rick on the forums here has a good build thread of his swap. It will net you near 200hp and be a lot simpler.

Your other options are V6 swaps if you are happy to move away from 4 cylinders. a 1MZ-FE swap is relatively inexpensive and will get you near 200hp again, but with more torque.

You also have the 3SGTE swap.

At the end of the day it comes down to the following:
1. How much money do you have to spend?
2. How mechanically inclined are you?

Cheers,

-Eric

This is for a GTE head but much the same, should be helpful to you.

This might also be useful for ideas,

All that done, I'd put some serious thought into a beams.  MUCH less muck around than 5sge, cheaper, and a 5s conv will potentially require engineer approval and I know your still on your Ps so may not even be legal for you.  Would be cool to see a 5sge with some serious head work though.

i rebuilt me first car the celica i have some mechanical knoledge not heaps haha but me father (zeus) use to be a aircraft engineer
i thought about the v6 but i wasnt sure on how much it would cost $$$, where to buy one or how easy it is to accumulate the parts for it

beams would be good to i dont want to be spending like $5000+ just yet but i mean if there is a beams motor out there for around $1000 id think about it, i just want something fun and faster then the 3sge mainly

but everything comes down to the cost

V6 swap would probably be the cheapest ( unless its a 2gr) but any swap will cost at least 5k unless yourr quite savvy

would you not have to do some fiddling around to get the v6 in there or is it repetitively straight forward

i did think beams would be easier plus it would be cheaper on rego but im guessing the parts arent as easy to buy if i bought either motor i would take the time to do it up to get the best results so it would take time accumulating the parts

does anyone know where i can get a cheep beams engine to fix up

If you were in WA id sell you my beams. It was suppossed to be built up for forced induction, but ive since moved on to motorcycles for monetery reasons.

I know of one kicking round at wtfauto (also in WA) thats not doing anything afaik.

Odd thing i do have is a set of h22a honda pistons which (going by my vague memory) would give a 10:1 cr with the 5s block/crank and 3s head. Something you'd wanna research yourself.

Other option, is build your 5s bottom end/3s head with forgies, 10:1cr for now, leave it NA for now, then ad turbo when off p's

For the 1MZ the basics are:
-Modified/ new engine mount (Can buy from Woodsport in the UK)
-Upgraded fuel pump
-Modify wiring harness.
-Exhaust modified/made

I'm sure theres more to do but the 1MZ is a relatively straight forward swap, and considering you can buy a manual 1MZ camry for under $1k if you know where to look, its not too bad

Alternatively, MRVirgin in SA is selling one for $5k with a blown diff. Would be an easy option too!

I am a big advocate for v6's due to good power and torque with that NA reliability, but others may have different opinions.

Are you on you P's?
