Titch try a clutch friction relearn first before trying a full relearn, as the tcu picks up on how the driver drives and they may have not of been shifting right!

Disconnect your battery for a couple of hours then reconnect

1. Warm up your car, until coolant temp guage is horizontal

2. On a straight stretch of road, put car into 1st and start moving

3. At an appropriate point, shift directly from 1st into 3rd

4. On 3rd, rev engine to over 3000rpm, then lift off throttle. Let car coast and rpm drop (without applying breaks) to below 3000rpm and downshift into
2nd. Again, let car coast in 2nd until rpm below 2000rpm.

5. Apply break and stop car.

Repeat steps 1 through 5 three times.

See if that helps at all.

Thank you Aussiespyder for your suggestion. I tried but car will not go into 3rd gear to be able to relearn now. Other gears ok no problems.I will take car to toyota dealer in newcastle nsw so they can hook up to computor to look at fault. Not sure what toyota workshop might be best to go in newcastle for smt gearboxes would appreciat advice.

spyder test drive by mechanic caused him to beleive there is a problem inside gearbox on 3rd gear.He stated it was a good idea to get a low kilometer smt transmission and replace the one in car. I have been told hydraulic fluid could cause a lot of problems . to check level you need to reduce pressure to zero in accumulator  by using the diagnostic tester but i do not have one can some one tell me of another way

Hi Guys,
I have very recently purchased a used Toyota MR2 Spyder 2000 Sequential Manual from the RAC driving centre (unregistered) at 30 000 kms. I have since passed registration however, the vehicle has an intermittent issue with the transmission (which is the stock 5-Speed Sequential). I have taken her to a Toyota dealer who performed a diagnostic and found the following error codes:
P1646 - Transmission ECU Malfunction
P1647 - Car Communication Malfunction
P1882 - M/T Code Shift Sensor Malfunction

When cruising normally in 4th gear at approx 60kmph (no high rev transitions or labouring engine) the smt warning light appears and the car will not allow any gearshifts up or down using neither the steering wheel shifter buttons nor the shift lever. There are no clunks or abnormal noises. The car is still able to drive in 4th however, the car stalls once the car comes to a standstill (then the check engine light comes on). The car will not register as being back to neutral until the key is placed in the off position and then put back on. The engine then starts as normal with no error lights showing.

To fix this we got the Toyota dealer to carry out a transmission fluid flush (with the correct synthetic oil as this was a suggested fix on some forums) and a 30000 km service was completed - no other issues were found.

The problem still persists.

I was looking to see if you guys had any experience with this issue or other similar issues and what you would suggest to remedy or diagnose the issue as it is a wonderful car to drive!

Many thanks in advance for any help you may be able to provide!

Callum

You can check the fluid by removing the air filter box, it's under neath, open drivers door for pump to pressure hpu and you should see how much you have.
Pump should go for 10-20seconds. Any issues with it, the smt light would display a code anyways.
