Hi All
Been waaaayyyy too long since i've been on here... But I'm sure you guys will be very interested in the MR2 now...
So after quietly accumulating parts and getting defected a month before getting the car to the workshop (located 600k's away from where I got defected... another story for another time...) I got to work on the MR2 and it's looking rather special now as we move into the tuning stages I might split this up into 2 posts cuz theres alot haha.
OK, What's been done? well what hasn't?
The cylinder head was the first part to be tackled:
Gen3 3sgte head (blueprinted and components cryotreated)
- Shimless Buckets out of 2zz
- Jun undersized titanium Retainers
- Jun Valve Guides
- 1mm OS Intake valves
- GSC Beehive Valve springs
- Brian Crower S3 Cams
- Adjustable Cam Gears
- Porting work to the intake/exhaust
- ARP Studs
I originally wasn't going to touch the bottom end... then we took the head off and saw slight wear on the bore... enough of an excuse as needed to strip and rebuild the bottom end as well... the owner of the workshop believed mark was due to improper cleaning of the bore from a previous rebuild... it passed the white rag test when I was done with it...
The Bolt on's list sounds nice, looks nice, smells nice..
- Borg Warner EFR8374... and the 3 year wait that went with it when I was informed the american indy car teams got them in precedence to me who had pre-paid for it... thankfully the aussie dollar was really good back then.
- Custom made twin-scroll exhaust
- Custom made tapered intake manifold
- Custom Air/Water Intercooler
- Custom pipework... much pain to be had here as you will see
- After-market radiator
Fuel System upgraded to handle pretty much any power i ask of it now... the ID's I got max out at 3700cc's... It was fun making it idle, so made the choice to run it exclusively on E85, and running 17.5 volts to the injectors to get the idle nice... it's very nice now idles like a stocker haha.
- Top Feed Fuel Rail
- ID 2000cc injectors
- Sard FPR
- 2.5L Surge tank
- Bosch 044 external pump
- Replaced all hoses with biofuel compatible ones save the in tank pump... will be changing that in short order I think.
Oil System was modified as a... preventative maintenance measure... now an oil cooler where the intercooler would usually be found... the thermo fan there for backup. On a separate note the exhaust manifold necessitated the requirement to make a custom dipstick... what a pain that was...
Also replaced the CV's with the ATS racing ones... gotta pull them apart as I think we did them wrong as evidenced by the "clunk clunk" when turning left when any amount of load is applied... straight line however is fine so dyno testing was able to be done.
I previously mentioned I had the wolf V500... Wolf were nice enough to upgrade me to the V550 when I found out they brought it out. We haven't done it yet but gonna put a clutch switch in and set up launch control and anti-lag and ignition cut on it... can't wait to see that working, bring on the quick shifting haha.
Anyway the build was pretty straight forward save a few choice things like forgetting to prime the oil pump and having to make up a dipstick tube and signal noise
With all that said and done we got it running and have starting the tuning process and after a few runs it was putting out over 600nm of torque on 16psi... still got a bit to do yet tuning wise haha! gotta get cams dialled in and then finish the break in before we go into the scary 20's and 30's
Anyway piccies coming up next :)
