Water injection, as the title suggests, injects water into the engine just before the manifold to absorb heat and lower intake charge temperature. A simple way is using a pressure switch to turn on the water injection at a certain PSI. Alternatively a map based injection system can be used for better tuning and control. Overall it means you can lean out your AFR and advance timing, however it is not a replacement for a more efficient intercooler. It's also suggested that a low water level switch be used to switch the ECU to "Safe" maps and disable the injection system. Check out Aquamist, otherwise there are a few DIY guides around the place as well.
