What oil do you use in your e153 gearbox. I'm thinking of running castrol syntrax 75w 90 does anyone have any input on this oil or is there something better to use. Gearbox has done 130xxxkms

GL4, MT90 or Castrol or Royal Purple.

Bad experiences with other brands in being a little more crunchie. GL5 is not good for Mr2. Gearbox additives is not good for Mr2.

I respect Falcons info on this topic, as the master of knowing these gearboxes.

That's a GL5 oil for separate diffs.
Don't use a GL5 oil in your transaxle!!

Definitely use a GL4, but you'll have to search for it.
I have used Amsoil 75W90  GL4  (Code MTG) for years with no problems.

My E153 (from Rev3 with factory LSD) has had Royal Purple oil in it for the past 4-5 years and shifts great. Not sure what specs the oil is though.

Previous SW20 with the same E153 LSD gearbox had Redline Shockproof lightweight (blue coloured oil) and that was very smooth for shifting.

AFAIM redline SHOCKPROOF is a GL5 grade. Which is not a good idea for syncro's.

Agree with Redline Shockproof. I used it once then replaced it immediately because my worn synchro suddenly got a lot worse. Putting the oil back in that Toyota recommends fixed it. Why aren't you all just using the Toyota recommended grade of oil?
I only tried Redline because Stevo the toolman was raving on about it so much. He was wrong.
Here's a good rule for you all - always use stock parts unless you are sure that they aren't good enough for the job. You will have a lot less issues if you follow this rule. 🙂

When I used the lightweight shockproof it was amazing. Extremely smooth shifting and made the gearbox lovely. This was on my 316KW SW20 6 or so years ago. Think it had MT90 in it before that.
