MODEL: SW30 Syder 2001
 
Hi all. 
I have noticed that both oil and coolant have reached low levels in just 2 months.
Now I'm considering if it's due to normal aging (current km is around 134,000 - 136,000) OR if it's a repair subject.
So far I have refilled 1L of oil, and will check again in 2 months). Coolant is yet to be treated

What oil are you using and what grade is it?

Time to consider replacing that engine.
 
It's highly likely that the rings are gone now (common issue)

Your take sounds relevant and seemingly the case, in saying that I'm only a ordinary MR2 owner so I did quick research on the topic to understand. Piston components.. okay, an engine replacement sounds very expensive. Im sure the piston rings can be replaced individually?

Hey. Nik_Lee,
My 1st full Oil change was with the genuine Toyota motor oil, no dramas.
During my 2nd full Oil change 'Toyota' was unavailable at the time so I used 'Nulon'.
Both Oils barley stretched over 2 months. The 3rd month was found to be critical a while back.
 
Now I recently did a 1L refill with 'Toyota' after 2 months because once again the oil was low.   
 
What do you mean about 'Grade'?

To be fair, pulling down the motor to refurbish it would be close to the cost of a replacement engine. I'd say it will come down to your own requirements for the machine, to determine what you do.

What do you mean about 'Grade'? 
  


The brand of oil is probably not as important as putting in the right grade, which is the viscosity (or thickness) For example 5W30 grade is listed for the ZZW30.
But for worn motors a thicker oil is often used, maybe 10W40 or 15W50 to slow down consumption.
 
BTW, any qualified mechanic should be able to diagnose what is causing your oil /coolant loss.
Until that is done you will only be guessing.
