Hi Guys,

Its Benny here from BYP Racing. We are known for specializing in Honda's and Honda's conversion and in 2016 we'll be tackling a Honda K-series engine conversion into the SW20 MR2 chassis

There was alot of things swaying us towards the SW20 MR2 and price point was definitely one of them. Considering you can purchase a chassis for around $3000 - $5000, it offers great value for money for a project car. With its mid rear application, it appeals for drive-ability, traction and the direction of this project car for the workshop

We have been involved in all forms of motorsports for the past few years and have had cars built for each purpose. There was one form of motorsport lacking which was the street aspect. With the growing market in the street crowd, we knew we had to build a car to appeal to this market. Lets face it, a FWD Honda will never be able to decently put down a big powerplant and RWD is limited to the S2000.

Chassis
The team looked into opinion of a chassis that is affordable, RWD/Mid rear, easy to find parts, proven chassis. All led to the MR2 SW20 chassis. After doing research for a few weeks, we picked up a very well maintain white SW20 complete car for $2000.

Powerplant
The elected powerplant is a Honda K20 engine package with a turbocharger for power adder. Our first package will be basic with the aim for 400kw at the rear wheels and 9 sec 1/4mile passes on street radials.

Here was some inspirational link which has made us get involved with this car and build. Im sure some of you guys must of watched it already

We'll be keep this build thread updated as the build progress. It will be quite active for the first few weeks since our predicted completion date will for Powercruise in late Feburary. So there is plenty to do in the next few weeks!

Engine mounts
We have gone with HUX Racing solid K20 engine mounts for the SW20. He is the only company that i know off that makes them.

Looks like a well constructed product. Finger crossed that these will fit with ease into the SW20 engine bay

For those who wants to go with a 24 engine, you will need to change one of these mounts to accommodate the difference in mounting position.

If anyone is interested in a set, we can bring them in from HUX Racing

Well you are certainly on the right track by choosing MR2 for chassis.  You will also find there are a lot of very experienced blokes on here who I'm sure will be willing to point you in the right direction.
I'm pleased to see you are installing a basic  power unit of 400kw initially to check proof of  concept.
Do keep us posted with your progress.   We like photos.  Lots of photos.   Cheers.

Welcome BYP. i have been impressed with your "giant killer" Hondas over the years on the circuit.

There are other mounts out there, but nothing available as easily as the HUx product. NVH GTFO!

As much as we loved to build a circuit MR2, we have our other cars built already for the purpose

You guys probably know more than me, but after looking into the MR2 and the things that HUX Racing has been doing, i believe the MR2 are great bang for buck cars. There challenging cars on the race track but rewarding when driven and set-up correctly

Car Weight approx 1000kg

I'm assuming that HUX Racing is based in NSW by seeing the rego plates in your car pics.

Would be nice to have an Australian based company for a change doing nice mods, makes a big difference being able to go to the workshop and buy parts and get advice over the counter rather then dealing over the interwebs and waiting to see what turns up in the mail.

Build Update

The rain stopped and we had some time after lunch to pull out the MR2 engine and do a test fit of the Honda K-series engine

Car had aftermarket headers (Genie) and a full exhaust system. If anyone want this, throw me an offer

Honda engine package was prepared last week with the Honda 5 speed gearbox (Car will be turbo'ed so elected to stick with a 5 speed)

As mentioned earlier, we are using HUX Racing Kswap engine mounts. These fitted perfectly and made the job of fitting the engine into the bay very easy

A lot of clearance to make a decent size dumpipe. For guys who is thinking of going naturally aspirated, you will be able to use the Kswap headers made for the FWD Honda conversion and with little modification it will fit.

So is basically what the Honda K-series engine look like in the SW20 engine bay. We have a lot of room to work with for a custom turbo manifold and decent size turbo.

Even though we are getting stronger axles and upgraded hubs for the turbo set-up, we will be making a set of K-swap driveshafts for anyone wants to do an naturally aspirated set-up

We will be spending sometime over the next few days to do wiring, coolant hose, heater hoses and axles before it goes to the fabricators to get the turbo system sorted
