It's often the 90 degree gearbox thingo that seizes causing the nylon worm drive inside to strip.
Need to separate cable etc to identify which component is at fault before ordering parts.

My mechanic called it a speedo transducer & described it exactly as you say: the 90 degree bit with nylon drive. I was hoping it might be the same part as used on a more common Toyota model because I haven't been able to find anything specifically for my car.
Edit: I think I understand what youre saying now: Am I correct in assuming you meant that the transducer thing is made up of a few different part numbers, which can be purchased seperately? That seems to be what Im finding. I may have just found it on amayama:
