Just read this article in the SMH and thought some of you might find it interesting. The productivity commission has completed a report recommending the government to allow importing of used vehicles. (like NZ)

That would be cool. No point in supporting the 'local car industry' - they have taken the support packages, made their staff redundant and then shut up shop.

Really tough one. I want it but it's a fine line. Can you imagine how many people will be ripped off by the dodgy importers.

No different to the dodgy car yards and private sales we have locally.

Plenty of good importers like Iron Chef Imports too :)

One of the benefits of the strict import laws is pretty good tracking of ownership. By no way perfect, but importing cars from country X...

But who doesn't want a rev5 hardtop turbo???

Iron Chef etc are just brokers. The dodgy guys will have a field day bringing in cheap substandard stock & winding back. People get lured in because they'd rather not wait. Yes, much like now but on a larger scale which equals more burnt consumers. Add to that, there's no de reg like certificates in other potential countries so there's more issues to be had.

As I said, it's good but needs to be regulated carefully to protect consumers.
