Dash sun light sensor?

Does anyone know what the dashboard sun light sensor does in the Japanese SW20? The Internet doesn't seem to have any info on the part number or what it does. Ebay suggests it has something to do with the climate control...

Just wondering if anyone else has had issues with rain getting in through the aw11's window weatherstrips?
