Just chasing an opinion on if I was to run 235/40/17 on the front with a 17x8 +35 rim and a 245/40/17 on rear with a 17x9 +35 rim?
 
I am running tein coilovers and just want to know if I will have any scrubbing issues up front?

You will need to measure using the wheels that are currently on the car and work out if the +35 8inch wides up front will hit the suspension or not. I've got coil overs and and 17x8 +35 will hit my springs. Also 235 on mine will rub the inside wheel well on full lock so again you will need to measure and calculate based on what is currently there. I'm running 17x7.5 up from with a  215 and just clear my coilovers by a few mil and get no rubbing. Depends though, there are only millimeters in it so really depends on your coilover widths.

235 will be touching most coil overs in the front and 245 on the rear is reasonably small considering.
 
You would be better using a 215/225 up front and 255 on the rear personally

I currently run 17x8 +35 fronts and 17x8 +15 rears (equates to roughly the same as your rear offest)
I have to run a 2mm slip on spacer currently for it to clear the coilover (HSD'S) But if youre tricky with your camber settings, you wont have to run a spacer

As for tires, they will be wayyyyyy too big. anything bigger than 215/40 on the front will most likely touch the coilover, as you need the stretch to keep the tyre away from the coilover

On the rears I run a 215/45 and on very big bumps it contacts the guard, not too big a worry though

I have run 215/40 on a 17x7.5 +32 front and 235/45 on a  17x8 +32 with no issues at all just need something a little wider, may look into the 255/40 or 265/40 rears.
 
I dont mind cutting the plastic guards a little around the wheels to fit a 235 on the front, the only issue is the clearance on the coilover, so may need a 2mm or 5mm spacer to clear it.

How so? You have an increased contact patch therefore more grip under threshold braking so your stopping distance will decrease along with lap times provided your brakes are decent. I run a  215 up front on a 7.5inch rim and 255 rear on a 9inch rim but only because its very hard to find wheels with the right offsets to clear the suspension upfront otherwise if I could run a 8 with a 235 I definitely would opt to. I'm not a fan of spacers however, I don't run spacers and all the top race suspension specialists I've spoken to also advise against them.

IDEAL world with the tyre fitting correctly, right offset, suspension moving correctly and most importantly actually not hitting the body and chassis of the car with the tyre when loaded up around corners it would be great. But this would not be the case without a lot of small mods. 
 
But this person is not asking for the best racing setup (he would not be asking the question he is), nor will he need more tyre in the front than a 225. The biggest tyre is not always best, and this i true in this instance.
 
Theory is great but practice is a lot better.
 
My own 225 on a 8 inch rim have zero issues with front end grip. Nor does The Pearl for instance that runs a 215/255 combo, or any of the other modified SW20's i have driven with a 225 street tyre.
 
Biggest rear tyre that can fit= Great
 
Biggest front tyre that can fit= Not necessarily worth it for the compromises it comes with
 
 

awsome thanks for that info mate, the reason I ask, I have a set of 235/40 toyo r1r and was unsure whether to put them on the front and go bigger for the back or not. 
 
so for now I will prob leave it with the 235/40 rear and wait until i am due for a new set of rears and put 255 or 265 on the rear. but will stay with the 215/40 front as that size is a little easier to source then the 225

215 on a 8 inch rim might give you a lot of issues with bump steer due to the amount of stretch on the tyre. When I had 8inch front with 215 on a gen 1 MR2, I reckon the car drove rubbish. Had to change wheels. The steering would tramline on every bump until I changed wheel setups. Tyre stores didn't even want to fit 215's on a 8inch rim, because the books all say the smallest tyre recommended to mount on a 8inch is 225. A tyre shop finally ended up doing the 215 for me cus I needed to clear the suspension and it was terrible...
