I stumbled upon my old hks fcd today actually. It's just chilling in the shed if you need it.

I'll PM, thanks

Did some more maintenance this weekend. Dizzy cap/rotor, spark wires, fresh oil and a clean.

Not wanting to mess with healthy gaskets, i attempted to clean up the valve cover and inlet manifold (copied Deevon) without removing. It looks better but not great.

Also put on my new 4abs sticker from Lumix. Size is spot on and it looks a lot better than the cracked 28yo sticker.

Since replacing the fuel pump, filter, and tank, I've noticed a fairly strong fuel vapor smell. I though it may settle but it's not getting better. It's not leaking, but stinks bad after hard throttle. Something to add to my growing list.

Regarding the fuel vapour smells you really need to track that down.
Check that the various vapour hoses were correctly refitted to the funny looking vertical collector thingy behind the heat shields. Check the high pressure pipe union near the front engine mount and at the fuel filter.
Did you reseal all the gaskets that were disturbed along the top of the tank?

I didn't do the tank swap so not sure about gaskets. All the lines viable from the engine bay look ok. I haven't checked the funny looking vertical thing though, I'll take a look.

One more thing sorted out, from 5SGTE.
Further boost tuning on hold until I can identify the source of fuel smell.

Sorted out the 'fuel' smell. It was actually leaking/burning a ton of oil. All sealed up now.
The latest of the never ending problems seams to be shift related.

Coming home from RNP on Saturday, I was finding it increasingly difficult to select gears. At one point the only gear I could select was 4th, which made for an interesting take off from traffic lights. Luckily down hill.
It slightly improved once everything cooled down but was still extremely stiff and hard to select gears.
There was no grinding or crunch, so my guess would be shift cables or bushes rather than syncro? I'm really hoping it's an easy external fix, rather than in the trans. The box has always been stiff and hard to select 1st and reverse, so fingers crossed the bushes gave out after a hard drive.

I'll try to pick up some skateboard bearings during the week and jack it up this weekend...

Changing the shifter bushings is pretty easy, you can do it without even jacking the car up
Also, check under the actual shifter in the car. if a screw or something falls under the shift boot, it can lodge it will commonly vibrate under the shifter and not allow you to select any or certain gears.

If you have always found it difficult to select gears, it could be the clutch master or slave seals deteriorate, or even the clutch hose can fail over time and swell up when you depress the clutch.

Cheers,

As Eric states it could be to do with the clutch hydraulic system not fully disengaging the clutch causing it to be difficult to get into gears. Will ruin syncros if not attended to.

^ that would crunch though wouldn't it, if not disengaging properly? There's no noise or grinding, it just feels as though something is misaligned and preventing gear selection. The master and slave cylinders are both less than 1,000 kms old and bled recently. I'll take a look from the top when I can and report back.

They don't always crunch, when the syncros get worn enough it will though.
I had my master cylinder seal go very slowly over time. Check for fluid near the pedal.
