The old ones in my 2 are the stock sizes, 15x7 and 8, offset 45. Tires are 195/55R15 all four (previous owner had put those on). The fronts at the moment they're pretty close to the spring/shock. 
 
I'm thinking of buying Enkei RPF1s 16x7 and x8, putting 205/45R16 on the front and on the rear 225(or235)/40R16. Offset is 25 front and 32 rear.
 
How accurate is Cliftons MR2 wheel calculator (ver 1.5.1)? Anyone use it? This is what it tells me. I don't think it takes into account tyre width. I tried changing the widths on front and back but results don't change. So with 205 for front, I'll be 5mm wider on either side of the rim and on the rear, with 225 I'll have 15mm out on either side, is that right? If I put offset 30 on the fronts, the calc says I have -7.35 from flushness.
 
Front flushness: -2.35mm tucked in from flush
Rear flushness: -9.35mm tucked in from flush
Front optimal flushness: 22.65mm
Rear optimal flushness: 22.65mm
Front suspension proximity: 28.35mm from possibly touching the suspension
Front comparison: 32.7mm further out than old wheel
Rear comparison: 25.7mm further out than old wheel
 
Also, I'm asuming Enkei means negative offset? On the chart they have, the offset column is under "Inset".

Do you have actually have stock MR2 15" wheels?  The stock 15" wheels are 15X6 and 15X7 both with a 45 mm offset.
Stock tyre sizes F 195/55R15 and R 225/50R15
 
 
 
 
 

Sorry yeah, stock 15x6 and 7 rims. If they're -45, doesn't that mean they should sit out more towards the fenders, giving a more flushed look? mine is tucked a fair way in (towards the inside).

The higher a - number the further 'in' they are lower -'s and definitely + will give you more 'out'.

Limited tyres for 16s these days. Maybe look at getting some 17s....? Dylan at Gorilla Industries has some nice ones.

You might need to do a lot more research before spending money on new wheels, especially since I saw on another post that you are considering coilovers, where front wheel/tyre clearance will be limited.
There is plenty of info on this forum on the subject if you use the search function.

I think you got the offset mixed up, the stock rims are 6' & 7' wide +45 offset.
To get a nice flush look without too much work on the guards, either 16x7 +25 & 16x8 +25 or 17x8 +30 & 17x9 +30.
You will find very limited tyre sizes in the 16'.

Alright I'll do some research on it. I thought I understood the sizings, but I guess not. Back to the drawing board.
 
Yeah I had a look at the tyre sizes for the 16" and they are very limited had a hard time finding ONE staggered set up lol. Probably get worse as the years go by. I was just hesitant on buying larger wheels because of weight. I wanted a known japanese brand that made lightweight rims as well, but I might have to broaden the search.
 
Mr2.co.uk has a fuel consumption thread, going to check the whole thread, see if going 17's would make much different. I'll check out the older threads in this forum as well, and PM some guys/gals with the same dilemma to see what they ended up with.
 
Edit: the RPF1s, 17"x9, 16.75lbs looks to be the heaviest. I read somewhere the stock rims (15") were 15.5lbs or so. How much of a different would that make performance wise and fuel consumption/efficiency wise? I'll do some search on it as well. The Enkei RPF1 chart has those offsets you mentioned as well, flypig.

Lenso D1rs are what I have if you are after a lightweight budget wheel... And you can order specific offset too.

Ok, so 17x7 and 17x8 seems to be the popular one. +30 to +35 is the flushed look for them, with enough clearance for coilovers (mainly front has problem). Is that right? 
 
Bigger rims will give better performance, but ride harsher because of lower profile tires and also reduce fuel economy because of added unsprung weight, but by how much though? Negligible? What did you guys find out when you change rim/tire sizes?
 
I'm getting about 550kms/40L driving mostly highways and city stop-go. I didn't get the car for it's fuel consumption, but if putting 17"s on it will reduce the consumption to, say, 450kms/40L, I guess I can live with that. And future plans of getting a turbo swap will probably reduce it even less, something to think about again...
