if you can get a hold of a load tester load test the battery once fully chared by the battery charger, that will tell you also if the batter is stuffed.

to check the Alternater charge start the car and with your multi metre test across the two terminals on the battery claps. it should read around 13-14.5v thats charge volts, then turn your head lights on and high beam if it drops below 12v your alternater is stuffed

Tested the battery again (even though the shop told me it was okay) turned out to hold no charge, and it was only a 270 cca battery.

Ended up getting an Aussie made 550cca battery and it seems to have solved all the issues. There is no drain and the alternator seems to be fine.

Will be getting the rust fixed in the next few weeks either by perfection body works at capalaba or my neighbour

Motor is coming out in A few weeks to get a full service

Thanks so much for all your help. Hopefully can take it to a club run soon!

270 CCA!!?? It's no wonder your car was hard to start. Even 350 CCA was a struggle for mine sometimes. My AC Delco dry cell is about 450 CCA which it lists for the SW20 3SGE. I Think that's the minimum

Well I guess that explains the whole thing. I never saw how many cca's it was till the other day.

Not just the CCA that old battery didn't sound like it was holding charge @ all. Good way to fry an alternator really.
