Hi everyone im just in need of some help regarding my engine on my 1995 bathurst mr2 ,when i bought the car the owner said he has reconditioned the motor and said it has only 15000 ks on it ,tho i have no way of knowing how many ks it has really done .. also with the n/a mr2s the engine code starts with 3s***** and mine motors engine number starts with Ns0**** so im starting to get worried,if anyone could help me with any information or anything that could help me that would be great thanks -hayden

is that what you have on the rego papers for engine number or what you can actually see on the block? often people screw up the engine number when they try to get it for rego papers as it's a PITA to see properly.
 
take your car to a mech and get a leak down test on the engine, this'll tell you the condition of the motor in general for piston ring wear and sealing of the valves, also a bore scope/camera down the spark plug wells will give you a look at the bore wall conditon.
 
also, pull the can cover off and have a look at the cams/head there. if it's nice and clean it'll show signs of good mainteneance/rebuild.

No way to really tell how many Km's on the motor. 
But you can do some checks to see if it was really reconditioned
 
How round are the piston bores?
Crankshaft bearings.  Reasonably new and polished?
Receipts, Log books?
 
Depending on your mechanical skills you may need some help to check the motor itself.
 
As to the engine code, I have no idea.  Doesn't match up to any code used by Toyota for engines or gearboxes.
A quick google search didn't locate it as a code for another manufacturer either.
All i can think of is that you misread

Its under the distributor, where the block meets head.
You didnt check before you bought it?
Post a pic of the engine...the number you mention is completely wrong...
 

Thanks guys for the reply ,as to the rego papers the engine number is Ns0****** so thats all the info i got of the motor ...when i bought the car the guys said to me that no matter what anyone says this motor is a bathurst and dont let anyone else tell you otherwise ,i thought that was a bit sus i just assumed that people might thhink its different because of all the work thats been done  beacuse the motor is heavily modified ill state some of the things done to the motor

The car runs really well i keep up with most turbo mr2s .. I went to the mechanic and he said the engine was very clean and that he recons the guy who owned it before would of spent losd of cash on the engine and i remeber the owner telling me he spent 8-10000 on the engine alone ... I only just realised the different engine number yesterday so i havent been to a mechanic since ... I will go and get a leak down test on the weekend ,if you guys could also tell me what you would do in this situation ??

Ok ill post a pic up  very soon and as for the engine number my number is 10 numbers long and starts with NS******** so i got a feeling its a different motor then .. And no i didnt check the engine number :(  when i bought it i just didnt think of it when i was buying the car i just trusted the guy and he was a very nice guy and didnt look like the guy that would hide anything ,i know it was silly of me not to ask but it was my mistake ,now i just need to find out what engine i got which is very difficult as i tried every site for the engine code and cant find anything on the engine number i have ....

Dude if the car drives well, no smoke and does not use up oil or coolant.
then i would bother with any testing.
You already bought.
I would only test before buying or if something is wrong with it....
 
Like i said post a pic, a 3sge is easy to identify.

How do i upload a pic here ?  
And also the car uses quite a bit of oil but doesnt blow any smoke and also the car drinks alot of fuel

all 3sge/gte motors have yamaha heads.
 
it's ferrea valves, they're a US company that make after market valves (not ferrarri)
 
all that's happened is whomever got the engine number onto the rego papers accidentally replaced the 3 with an N that's all it is.
 
also, it's more likely that your car is an australian delivered "bathurst" model. there's no such thing as a "bathurst motor". unles you mean it was the original motor that came in the ADM bathurst model. but it's nothing "special" it was only NA 180PS
 
 

Oh ok i had no idea about the yamaha heads or the ferrea valves all i heard the guy say is ferrari ,maybe he said ferrea but it just sounded like farrari at the time . I think that maybe it is a different motor due to the numbers being 10 digits long even if it was a mistake on the rego papers the 3sge motor can with 3s and 7 digits after as you can see in one of the pics above .. I know the motor was nothing special i think thats why the guy spent thousands on it  ..but im really hopeing he hasn't changed the engine
